Doing space does not require a creatio ex nihilo but depends instead on manifold resources. Among these is the architecture of built, designed and furnished space. Semiotic resources such as natural language, and embodied resources such as sensory perception, body movement and spatial cognition, have received much attention in recent years. In contrast, architecture has long been neglected when it is the interactive achievement of space that is placed on the agenda. We shall begin our contribution by roughly sketching out how space and spatiality have been treated in linguistic pragmatics, and how conversation analysis and related research has coined the term "interactional space" to account for the many ways in which spatial aspects of the environment can become interactively relevant. Contrary to the notion of space as achievement, the role of space as a resource in social interaction has only recently been rediscovered. We shall, therefore, take up the concept of "architecturefor-interaction" to account for what architecture affords social interaction. It will be shown that architecturefor-interaction manifests itself in a wide range of usability cues that are systematically taken up within social interaction.

This article explores how close one can come to a cultural-scientific perspective on the basis of a constitution-analytical methodology. We do this on the basis of a comparison of the celebration of Totensonntag in Zotzenbach (Southern Hesse) and Sarepta (Wolgograd). In both places, there are protestant churches that perform this ritual to commemorate the dead on this “Sunday of the Dead” as a part of their church service. Our scientific interest lies in the reconstruction of the rituality produced during the in situ execution. In both services, the names of the deceased are read out and a candle is lit for each deceased person. In Zotzenbach the priest reads out the names and an assistant ignites the candles for the deceased, whereas in Sarepta the bereaved are responsible for this. Since the ritual is organised in very different ways in terms of architecture-for-interaction (statically in Zotzenbach, spatially dynamic in Sarepta), we can reconstruct two completely different models of rituality: a demonstrative one (Zotzenbach) and a participative one (Sarepta). The demonstrative model works on the basis of a finely tuned coordination between the two church representatives and is aimed at a dignified execution. The model in Sarepta is not suitable for the production of formality due to its participatory structure. Here, however, the focus is also on the aspect of socialization, which goes beyond the church service and offers the Russian-German worshipers the opportunity to situationally constitute as a culturally homogeneous group.

Die Fallanalyse rekonstruiert aus multimodaler Perspektive eine Unterstützungsinteraktion im Unterricht. Die Unterstützung wird dabei als gemeinsame Herstellung des daran beteiligten Schülers und Lehrers konzeptualisiert. Es werden detailliert die vom Schüler produzierten Hinweise auf seine "Hilfsbedürftigkeit" und die vom Lehrer eingesetzten Ressourcen bei seiner Hilfeleistung konstitutionsanalytisch rekonstruiert. In der falltranszendierenden Theoretisierung wird mit Bezug auf das gesprächsrhetorische Konzept "Unterstützen" die Spezifik interaktiver Hilfeleistungen im Unterricht als konstitutive Anforderung an das professionelle Handeln von Lehrer/innen reflektiert. This single case analysis reconstructs supportive interaction in the classroom from a multimodal perspective. The support is conceptualised as a joint activity of the participating pupil and teacher. The article analyses in detail how the pupil indicates his need for assistance and the resources used by the teacher in the assistance he gives. In theorising beyond the single case, the article reflects on the rhetorical concept of "support" and on the specifics of interactive assistance in the classroom as a constitutive requirement for the professional activity of teachers.
