Video game play and lucid dreams: Implications for the development of consciousness.

Abstract: The improvement of various cognitive skills associated with video game play has been well documented; however, the development of consciousness implications have not been considered. In the present study several potential indicators of consciousness development, including and especially lucid dreaming frequency, were examined as a function of video game play. In the first study, high video game players were more likely to report lucid dreams, observer dreams, and dream control when dream recall frequency and m… Show more

“…Also, such groups can provide a forum that encourages attempts to induce lucidity and so can become self-fulfilling. The latter estimate from the videogamer sample is above the model estimate and all other participant characteristic categories, in line with is expected by Gackenbach's hypothesis (Gackenbach, 2006;Gackenbach & Hunt, 2014).…”

“…Additionally cultures where video-games are popular may also have higher reported lucid dreaming prevalence and frequency rates, as frequent video game play has been associated with lucid dreaming incidence (Gackenbach, 2006(Gackenbach, , 2009Gackenbach & Kuruvilla, 2008). Gackenbach & Hunt (2014) have proposed this may be due to significant parallels between game play and meditation and ultimately lucid dreaming.…”

“…In this research program, we have been investigating whether video game play may be affecting the consciousness of players. Towards this end, we have found higher lucid dreaming among gamers (Gackenbach 2006;, more flow (Gackenbach 2008a), more absorption (Gackenbach 2007), and a single-minded focus on gaming (Gackenbach et al 2009). Furthermore, absorption in various forms seems to be a hallmark of gaming.…”

“…The Video Game History Questionnaire (Gackenbach 2006) is a 32-item survey which gathers background information about the participants' lifelong involvement with video games. Sex, age, education, and occupation were recorded, as well as gaming session frequencies, durations, number of games played, and age begun gaming.…”

“…Descobriu que a direcionalidade desses movimentos coincidia com a história dos sonhos relatada pelos participantes do experimento. Estudos recentes, a exemplo do de Gackenback (2006) falam sobre a correlação entre desenvolvimento cognitivo, videogames e uma frequência maior em sonhos lúcidos. Erlacher e Schredl (2008) demonstraram que tarefas previamente combinadas e executadas durante um sonho lúcido aumentam o batimento cardíaco em comparação a sonhos "normais", não-lúcidos.…”
