Video Browser Showdown 2012-2019: A Review

Abstract: The Video Browser Showdown (VBS) is a challenging video retrieval competition annually performed at the International Conference on MultiMedia Modeling (MMM). This paper presents a review of all eight years of the VBS performed so far-as a summary of the keynote presented at CBMI 2019. It discusses the different types of tasks and sessions, provides an overview of the datasets and participating teams, and it gives some insights on the setup and evaluation procedure. It also evaluates the progress made over the… Show more

“…The first system is vitrivr [24] -a multimedia retrieval system that is built to cope with many types of media including images, videos, audios and 3D models. It was the winner of the Video Browser Showdown [25] in 2017 and 2019, which is a similar challenge to LSC, but is aimed at interactive video retrieval. The LSC2019 vitrivr system introduced a new type of media data called image sequence that combines a series of images into segments, which enables a better data representation and association.…”

“…In the comparatively short time the Lifelog Search Challenge offers a common basis for the evaluation of retrieval approaches geared towards lifelog data, participating teams have already begun to explore several aspects of the retrieval process. Multiple teams started out adapting their retrieval approaches originally developed for the Video Browser Showdown [25], an interactive video retrieval campaign, to the similarly structured lifelog retrieval task, which lead to a strong focus on the visual aspects of the lifelog data [16,18,22]. Other systems have experimented with novel user interaction approaches.…”
