Raman and IR spectra of Te(OJ3),-2Na,P30,~6H,0 were recorded and analysed. The vibrational bands due to P,O:-, TeO, octahedra and water molecules were identified. It was found that P,O;-has a ring structure in the compound. The TeO, group and P30;-were found to coexist independently in the crystal. Further, the water molecule are non-equivalent in the unit cell.Vibrational spectra of compounds containing P30,3 -are of interest because of the influence of ring-chain polymorphism on their vibrational modes.' So far there has been no report of the IR and Raman spectra of phosphate-tellurates containing a condensed phosphate ion. Raman and IR spectroscopic studies of the compound have been carried out to understand the nature of the P,O,,-entity and the water molecules in it.The sample was prepared using the method given by Boudjada and co-worker~.',~ The Stokes Raman spectrum was excited using 514.5-nm radiation and recorded using a Spex Ramalog 1401 double monochromator equipped with a Spectra-Physics Model 165 argon ion laser (power 60mW). PE 983 and FIR 30 Polytech instruments were used to obtain the IR spectrum of the sample in KBr and polyethylene.Te(OH), *2Na,P,O, *6H 20 crystallizes in the hexagonal system (space group P63lm) containing two formula units in the unitThe main feature of the structure' is the coexistence of the two different and independent anions, P,O, rings and TeO, octahedra, linked by NaO, octahedra. Factor group analysis (with TeO, having 0, symmetry in a Ci site and P3Q93-having C,, symmetry in a Ci site and P,O;-having C 3 h symmetry in a C3 site) gives the distribution of irreducible representations at k = 0 as r = ~oA,(R) + ~OE,(IA) + 30Elg(R) + ~O E *~( R ) + 30Au(1R) + 31Bu(IA) -t 30E,,(IR) + 31E,,(IA)where R = Raman active, IR = infrared active and IA = inactive. The interpretation of the bands due to P,O,,-may be made on the basis of the characteristic vibrations of POP and OPO groups. The bands due to &(POP) could not be assigned independently as the v4 and vs modes of TeO, also occur in the same region (Table 1).It has been reported' that one of the characteristic features of P,O,,-with a chain structure is the pre-
