Vibration Suppression of the Rotating Shaft using the Axial Control of the Repulsive Magnetic Bearing

Abstract: A repulsive magnetic bearing supports a rotating shaft without contact by utilizing a magnetic repulsive force between the magnets. However, because of the nonlinear characteristic of the magnetic repulsive force, the vibration during passage through the critical speed may increase. This paper investigates a vibration suppression method of the rotating shaft supported by the repulsive magnetic bearing. A vibration suppression method by controlling the axial displacement of the repulsive magnetic bearing is pro… Show more

“…The equations of motion given in (10), (12), (14), (20), and (21) are derived according to the centre of mass of the flywheel. Since the repulsive bearings in the radial directions are stable, only the axial direction will be controlled by an AMB.…”

“…On the other hand, AMBs consume energy and need a feedback control in operation. An RMB uses repulsive magnetic force generated by PMs for a magnetic levitation [13][14][15][16][17]. According to the Earnshaw theorem, a stable magnetic levitation is impossible in a system composed solely of PMs.…”

“…Sugai et al (127) studied the nonlinear spring characteristics of a repulsive magnetic bearing, especially, about the effect of the length and the axial displacement of magnet. Inoue et al (128) discussed a vibration suppression method in a repulsive magnetic bearing. They controlled the axial position of the inner ring relative to the outer ring.…”

“…The influence of the axial control of the RMB on the vibration characteristics is studied. Next, the vibration suppression by controlling the axial displacement of the RMB as the function of the rotational speed is proposed and investigated (Inoue et al, 2009b). Finally, the vibration suppression effect of the proposed method is also validated experimentally.…”
