Vibration Isolation by a Variable Stiffness and Damping System

Abstract: Most passive vibration isolation systems are composed of springs and dampers. Although it is possible to improve the isolation performance by active vibration control, the complexity, power requirements and cost of such a system have restricted its use. A vibration isolation system with variable damping is practical and has good performance in the high frequency region, but it was found not to improve the responses in the low frequency region. On the base of a damping on-off control method, a stiffness on-off … Show more

“…TII-18-3113 2 Based on these motivations, the concept of variable stiffness has been integrated into damping variable suspension system to form a variable stiffness and damping suspension and this topic has been attracting increasing attentions recently [11][12][13][14][15][16]. Zhang et al [17,18] [22]. In their design, the damping and the stiffness cannot be controlled independently because that the two MR dampers were installed in series.…”

“…However, the size limitation of this structure makes it unsuitable in real application [30]. In order to overcome these drawbacks, our group designed a compact shock absorber with variable stiffness and damping features [31,32].…”

“…It is easy to achieve the variable damping with an MR damper in vibration systems. The authors of this paper proposed a new structure and control algorithms using two controllable dampers in series to realize the variable damping and stiffness in vibration control system (6) . In this paper, the time and frequency responses of the system with two MR dampers to the sinusoidal, sweep and random inputs were investigated in experiments and calculations.…”
