Background Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been associated with a progressive decline in cognitive functions. This may lead to significant consequences for the person with CKD physically, psychologically and socially and may affect the everyday lives of the family. Objectives To explore the everyday life experiences of next of kin of persons with CKD and cognitive impairment (CI). Design A qualitative design with semi‐structured individual interviews with next of kin of persons with CKD and CI to gather in‐depth information about the everyday life experiences of the next of kin. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed inductively based on qualitative thematic analysis. Findings Based on the analysis, four themes were constructed: CI evolves gradually and is multifaceted; balancing everyday life challenges; finding ways to deal with their situation and knowledge enables understanding. Conclusion Next of kin took responsibility and developed strategies for making everyday life function for the person with CKD and CI, which required considerable structure and a number of actions. They needed information about the CI and developed strategies for how to protect the person with CKD from being exposed. To provide themselves a personal space, next of kin turned to family, friends and people in comparable situations. To identify and address unmet care needs, healthcare professionals must proactively demonstrate an increased focus on CI and focus on the potential care needs of the person with CKD and their next of kin.

Aim To investigate the experiences and perspectives of everyday life among patients on lifelong haemodialysis and their partners. Design A qualitative exploratory study with a phenomenological–hermeneutic approach. Method Data were collected through individual interviews. In total, five patients in haemodialysis and their partners were included in the study. Data were analysed with inspiration from Ricoeur's theory around narratives and interpretation on three levels: naïve reading, structural analysis and critical interpretation and discussion. Data was collected between February 2018–June 2019. Results Limitations caused by the disease and time‐consuming treatment influenced daily life. In particular, the partners needed to have time on their own. Knowledge about the disease and participation in treatment were significant to both patients and partners. There were considerations about illness progression. Relationships to their social networks and healthcare professionals were a significant and important part of daily life for both parties.

Palliative care needs experienced by Danish patients with end‐stage kidney disease

Background Patients with end‐stage kidney disease (ESKD) may have palliative care needs. A tool validated in a Danish context to identify such needs is lacking. The Integrated Palliative Outcome Scale—Renal (IPOS‐Renal) aims to identify patients' palliative care needs. The current study is the first phase of a research project translating and validating the IPOS‐Renal into Danish. Objectives To investigate palliative care needs among Danish patients with ESKD. Design A literature review was conducted using meta‐ethnography inspired by Noblit and Hare. A focus group with health care professionals (HCPs) and semi‐structured individual patient interviews were conducted and analysed using Malterud's principles of systematic text condensation. Results A synthesis of 15 studies, a focus group with 13 HCPs, and interviews with nine patients were conducted. We found that patients with ESKD experienced several symptoms related to physical, social, mental and existential and practical needs. The most prominent findings were fatigue, reduced physical functioning, dizziness, impaired memory, dependency on relatives or HCPs, social isolation and loss of identity. Conclusion The palliative care needs identified in the Danish patient population are substantiated by the IPOS‐Renal questionnaire. However, some Danish patients also appear to struggle with dizziness and impaired memory. These symptoms do not appear specifically in the IPOS‐Renal questionnaire but may have to be included in a Danish version.
