“…However, there is no unambiguous counter-jet in any of these sources. In a similar study of a sample of 13 radio galaxies by Fernini et al (1993Fernini et al ( , 1997, only two have radio jets and neither of these show evidence of any counter jet. Although radio jets are not frequently detected in FRII radio galaxies, two of the good examples of counter-jets seen in FRII radio sources are associated with relatively nearby radio galaxies.…”

“…FR II sources (l h k 10 kpc, where l h is linear size of radio source) in our sample are selected from FR II radio galaxies in the 3CR catalog (Hardcastle et al 1998;Fernini et al 1993;Bridle et al 1994;Gilbert et al 2004;Kharb et al 2008). MSOs (1 P l h P10 kpc) are selected from the samples in Dallacasa et al (2002aDallacasa et al ( , 2002b.…”

“…Their side‐on counterparts are the narrow‐line radio galaxies (NLRG). The ideal comparison sample would consist of NLRG comparable in luminosity and redshift to the quasars observed in Paper 1, but the frequency of detection of jets in these objects in existing observations is very low (Fernini et al 1993, 1997) and we cannot investigate correlations with jet sidedness. By contrast, the detection rate of jets achieved for nearby FRII radio galaxies is high, and we have selected a sub‐sample of these sources with detected jets.…”
