Vertical zonation of Sphagnum mosses along hummock-hollow gradients

Abstract: The vertical distributions of nine Sphagnum species and four associated mosses in two bogs (Adirondack Mountains, New York) were analyzed for interspecific and interbog differences. Based on 4300 sample points, Sphagnum mean heights ranged from 12 to 43 cm above the water table and the sequence of species was similar in both bogs (S. cuspidatum and S. majus) < (S. fallax and S. angustifolium) < (S. magellanicum, S. rubellum, and S. russowii) < (S. fuscum and S. nemoreum). However, at Bloomingdale Bog,… Show more

“…The existence of hummock-hollow microtopography has important impacts on hydrological dynamics (Lindholm and Markkula, 1984;Verry et al, 2011b), nutrient availability (Chapin et al, 1979;Damman, 1978), plant species distribution and productivity (Andrus et al, 1983;Moore, 1989), and decomposition rates (Johnson and Damman, 1991). Many wetland ecosystem models drive biogeochemical simulations using observed water table depth as an input variable (St-Hilaire et al, 2010;Frolking et al, 2002;Hilbert et al, 2000).…”

“…The vertical gradient, which translates into a microtopographic or microstructural division, embraces from pools and water saturated depressions to dry hummocks. This is one of the most relevant factors when assessing the specific richness and the floristic composition (Andrus & al., 1983;Wheeler, 1993;Wheeler & Proctor, 2000;Rydin & Jeglum, 2006). The latter is not applicable to tepuales, where the bryophytic carpet is homogeneous.…”
