The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies in Girolando cows, in order to evaluate the association between seropositivity and reproductive disorders. Blood samples were collected from 40 dairy cows in their reproductive phase from the cranial superficial epigastric vein. The blood samples were tested using the Indirect Fluorescence Antibody Test (IFAT) to detect anti-N.caninum antibodies. The serological results were used to verify whether there was any association with the manifestation of reproductive disorders based on data from the records of reproductive history from 2017 to 2018 as well as the clinical observations of the herd throughout this study. The Fisher exact test was used to verify the existence of an association between the serology and reproductive disorders, adopting a 95% confidence level. The serological results showed a 27.5% seroprevalence in the herd for N. caninum, however, after statistical analysis, no association between seropositivity and reproductive disorders was found in the evaluated herd. Although the studied population is infected with Neospora caninum, we can infer that anti-Neospora caninum antibodies present in Girolando dairy cows at the UFRRJ Dairy Cattle Facility are not associated with the occurrence of reproductive disorders.

Resumo.A neosporose tem emergido no Brasil como uma das principais doenças causadoras de aborto em bovinos no Brasil e no mundo. Causada pelo protozoário Neospora caninum afeta uma diversidade de espécies animais. Em busca da elucidação biológica, epidemiológica e diagnóstica, vários estudos se delineiam a cerca desse agente. O objetivo do presente estudo foi revisar a literatura científica sobre a neosporose bovina no Brasil, abordando os principais aspectos etiopatogênicos, epidemiológicos, clínicos, diagnósticos e imunoprofiláticos, visando à construção do atual cenário da neosporose na bovinocultura brasileira. A estratégia de busca para seleção dos estudos foi um levantamento realizado nas bases de dados PubMed, Lilacs, SciElo e Google scholar, no período janeiro de 2005 a março de 2020. Parte majoritária dos estudos foram levantamentos soroepidemiológicas que visavam determinar a ocorrência e fatores de risco da doença. A ocorrência média da neosporose encontrada nos estudos foi de 32,7% (2,45%-100%) associadas aos fatores de risco histórico de aborto, presença de cães, tipo de criação, idade e ausência de teste diagnóstico na introdução de novos animais nas propriedades. Os principias métodos diagnósticos utilizados foram os sorológicos. O aborto foi apontado como principal manifestação clínica da doença. A neosporose bovina está amplamente distribuída pelo Brasil, em alguns estudos de bovinocultura de exploração leiteira foram identificadas soroprevalências acima de 90% justificando-se assim, a implementação de estratégias de controle e profilaxia da neosporose bovina no Brasil, em busca de melhorias dos índices reprodutivos do rebanho nacional.

Toxoplasmosis and neosporosis are diseases with worldwide distribution that are associated with reproductive problems in livestock and responsible for economic losses. This review presents an overview of the current knowledge relative to these diseases in water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). In general, buffalo are considered resistant to clinical toxoplasmosis because there are studies only reporting serological evidence of natural infection in these animals. Studies have described age, poor hygienic status of the farm, and presence of cats as risk factors for the development of Toxoplasma gondii infection in buffalo. It must be highlighted that buffalo meat, which does not receive adequate freezing treatment, could be a potential source for toxoplasmic human infection as well as the importance of raw buffalo milk in the transmission of toxoplasmosis to human beings. Neospora caninum is considered one of the major causes of abortion and responsible for huge economic losses in cattle. Vertical transmission is the main route to infect calves, and is responsible for maintaining the parasite within a herd. In buffalo, vertical transmission is also described; moreover, although there are indications that N. caninum may be associated with abortion in dairy buffalo, the reproductive importance of neosporosis is apparently lower in buffalo relative to cattle. Most studies have identified a higher time of exposition to N. caninum oocysts relative to age. The household system was also described as a risk factor for infection, possibly due to persistent contact between the home-raised buffalo and canids. The fetal immune competence of buffalo is similar to bovine, and buffalo fetus are highly susceptible to infection during the first trimester of pregnancy, indicating that N. caninum may be an abortigenic agent in buffaloes. Alternatively, it is interesting to note there is evidence that the inflammatory response in pregnant buffalo infected with N. caninum is mild enough to avoid abortion in most cases. It is proposed that the possible transmission of toxoplasmosis through unprocessed milk and buffalo meat may occur, which is important in terms of public health. Additionally, there is strong evidence to suggest that N. caninum may be associated with abortion in buffalo.
