The physical and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols at a suburban site in North China were continuously measured from July 20, 2014 to August 30, 2014. The particle number concentration (N a ), mass concentration (M a ), geometric mean diameter (GMD), scattering coefficient (σ sc ), and Angström exponent (α) were calculated. The potential source contribution was also analyzed. Mm -1 , and 1.87, respectively, in rainy days. Small-sized aerosols (< 100 nm) dominated the total aerosol numbers under clear conditions. The diurnal variation of N a showed one peak, usually appearing at 12:00, which could be correlated with new particle formation (NPF) events. Most NPF events began at 08:00-10:00 and continued until 12:00-14:00. The average particle formation rate (FR) and particle growth rate (GR) were 1.93 cm -3 s -1 and 7.24 nm h -1 , respectively. The diurnal variation of M a showed two peaks, at 7:00 and 21:00, which were caused by local or regional transport of urban plumes. A potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis indicated that aerosol potential sources in Xinzhou were mainly concentrated in the relatively developed, densely populated areas, particularly in some areas to the east and southeast of Shanxi, and the PSCF values of these areas were higher than 0.6.

Abstract. Observational studies of aerosol optical properties are useful for reducing uncertainties in estimations of aerosol radiative forcing and forecasting visibility. In this study, the observed near-surface aerosol optical properties in urban Nanjing are analysed from March 2014 to February 2016. Results show that near-surface urban aerosols in Nanjing are mainly from local emissions and the surrounding regions. They have lower loadings but are more scattering than aerosols in most cities in China. The annual mean aerosol extinction coefficient (EC), single-scattering albedo (SSA) and asymmetry parameter (ASP) at 550 nm are 381.96 Mm −1 , 0.9 and 0.57, respectively. The aerosol absorption coefficient (AAC) is about 1 order of magnitude smaller than its scattering coefficient (SC). However, the absorbing aerosol has a larger Ångström exponent (AAE) value, 1.58 at 470/660 nm, about 0.2 larger than the scattering aerosols (SAE). All the aerosol optical properties follow a near-unimodal pattern, and their values are mostly concentrated around their averages, accounting for more than 60 % of the total samplings. Additionally, they have substantial seasonality and diurnal variations. High levels of SC and AAC all appear in winter due to higher aerosol and trace gas emissions. AAE (ASP) is the smallest (largest) in summer, possibly because of high relative humidity (RH) which also causes considerably larger SC and smaller SAE, although intensive gas-toparticle transformation could produce a large number of finer scattering aerosols in this season. Seasonality of EC is different from the columnar aerosol optical depth. Larger AACs appear during the rush hours of the day while SC and backscattering coefficient (Bsp) only peak in the early morning. Aerosols are fresher in the daytime than at night-time, leading to their larger Ångström exponent and smaller ASP. Different temporal variations between AAC and SC cause the aerosols to be more absorbing (smaller SSA) in autumn, winter and around rush hours. ASP has a good quasi-log-normal growth trend with increasing SC when RH is below 60 %. The correlation between AAC and SC at the site is close but a little smaller than that in suburban Nanjing in spring. Atmospheric visibility decreases exponentially with increasing EC or SC, more sharply in spring and summer, and it could be further deteriorated with increasing SSA and ASP.

Abstract. Vertical distributions of aerosol optical properties derived from measurements made during 11 aircraft flights over 15 the North China Plain (NCP) in May-June 2016 during the Air Chemistry Research In Asia (ARIAs) were analyzed. Aerosol optical data from in situ aircraft measurements shows good correlation with ground-based measurements. The regional variability of aerosol optical profiles such as aerosol scattering and backscattering, absorption, extinction, single scattering albedo (SSA), and the Ångström exponent (α) are for the first time thoroughly characterized over the NCP. The SSA at 550 nm showed a regional mean value of 0.85±0.02 with moderate to strong absorption and the α ranged from 0.49 to 2.53 (median 20 1.53) indicating both mineral dust and accumulation mode aerosols. Most of the aerosol particles were located in the lowest 2 km of the atmosphere. We describe three typical planetary boundary layer (PBL) scenarios and associated transport pathways as well as the correlation between aerosol scattering coefficients and relative humidity (RH). Aerosol scattering coefficients decreased slowly with height in the clean PBL condition, but decreased sharply above the PBL under polluted conditions, which showed a strong correlation (R 2 ≥ 0.78) with ambient RH. Back-trajectory analysis shows that clean air masses generally 25 originated from the distant north-western part of China while most of the polluted air masses were from the heavily polluted interior and coastal areas near the campaign area.
