Physical and Optical Properties of Atmospheric Aerosols in Summer at a Suburban Site in North China

Abstract: The physical and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols at a suburban site in North China were continuously measured from July 20, 2014 to August 30, 2014. The particle number concentration (N a ), mass concentration (M a ), geometric mean diameter (GMD), scattering coefficient (σ sc ), and Angström exponent (α) were calculated. The potential source contribution was also analyzed. Mm -1 , and 1.87, respectively, in rainy days. Small-sized aerosols (< 100 nm) dominated the total aerosol numbers under clear … Show more

“…The same features were shown in observational studies in Beijing (Bergin et al, 2001), the Pearl River Delta (Cheng et al, 2008), Mt. Huang (Yin et al, 2010), and Shanxi (Li et al, 2017) of China, and they said that the main reason was the deliquescence occurred more frequently under high RH conditions, which was advantageous to nitrate accumulation on the surfaces of aerosol particles especially particles with larger size and led to particles size increasing. Some studies also pointed out that clouds were the main source of accumulation mode particles, and they considerably alter particles by chemical and physical processes (Hoppel et al, 1985, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1996; Hudson, 2007; Hudson et al, 2015, 2018; Noble & Hudson, 2019).…”

“…The values of measured AOD were higher in the north and south and lower in the east and west. The AOD in the region covered by the observation experiment ranged from 0.3 to 0.7, and the values were smaller than those in some northern and eastern regions of China (Li et al, 2017;Yuan et al, 2016).…”

“…However, different dominant aerosol types were observed in this study. This is likely because Xinzhou is located in the middle of Shanxi Province, an important energy and industrial chemical center of China (Li et al 2015(Li et al , 2017 and an important source of coal combustion emissions in central China (Wang et al 2016). The characteristics of the site may also lead to the relatively low values of AAE.…”

“…An increase in the concentration of anthropogenic aerosol particles from industrial emissions may exert a strong effect on the regional atmospheric environment and climate. From the year 2011, a few observational experiments concerning aerosols and clouds have been performed in this area, and some results have been reported (Li et al, 2011(Li et al, , 2012(Li et al, , 2015a(Li et al, , 2015b(Li et al, , 2017aWang et al, 2012), which attracted considerable attention from researchers and the public. This aircraft observation campaign was conducted at Wusu International Airport located in Taiyuan (112.55 E,37.867 N and altitude: 778 m ASL), the capital of Shanxi Province, and the observation area was mainly in the central area of Shanxi (Fig.…”

“…AIRCRAFT MEASUREMENTS addition, the concentration of aerosol particles with sizes ranging from 10 nm to 0.1 lm could reach 10 4 cm À3 near the surface under clear sky conditions in the North China Plain (Wang et al, 2012;Zhang et al, 2014;Li et al, 2015aLi et al, , 2017a. Above 1000 m, there was a sharp decrease in N a , and the average N a decreased to 1100 cm À3 at heights ranging from 1000 m to 3500 m. The average N a further decreased to approximately 400 cm À3 above the height of 3500 m. The vertical distribution of the particle size showed different features (Fig.…”
