Vermiwash: An agent of disease and pest control in soil, a review

Abstract: Vermiwash is a liquid extract produced from vermicompost in a medium where earthworms are richly populated. It comprises a massive decomposer bacteria count, mucus, vitamins, different bioavailable minerals, hormones, enzymes, different antimicrobial peptides, etc. This paper aimed to assess how these natural products in vermiwash suppressed the pathogen and pests. Thus, we have reviewed the importance of vermiwash/vermicompost in disease control, the mechanism of disease suppression, the components of vermiwa… Show more

“…The use of cannabis manure has been reported to be effective in removing harmful soil elements [84]. The plant residues were also used in the preparation of vermiwash, which is used in various agricultural and horticultural activities [85]. The paste of roots of Cirsium arvense and Rubus ellipticus was practiced to remove the root borer from the apple plant in the study region.…”

“…Earthworms encourage the growth of "beneficial decomposer aerobic bacteria, Earthworm hosts millions of microbes [14] hydrolytic enzymes protease, amylase, lipase, cellulose and chitinase and hormones that helps in rapid decaying of complex organic matter into vermicompost in a relatively smaller duration of 2 months [16]. There are water passing through columns of vermi beds, which percolates from vermibed, it called Vermiwash a liquid fertilizer rich in plant growth hormone are used as a foliar spray [17].…”

“…The liquid phase extract of vermicompost, vermiwash, contains several compounds, decomposing bacteria, fungi, vitamins, enzymes, mucus and skin secretion produced by earthworms, and as the earlier literature confirms, it can aid the suppression of diseases and decrease the growth of pathogenic bacteria and pests. Therefore, vermiwash, either incorporated into the soil or sprayed on the plants, can effectively help protect crops from bacterial and fungal pathogens and pests [272].…”
