-In this study, a geometric approach was used in order to model the relationships between intra-tree-ring wood density variations and tracheid anatomical characteristics. One Douglas fir was studied in detail. Anatomical slides of 256 tree-rings were compared with the corresponding density profiles. Radial and tangential tracheid diameters decline from earlywood to latewood by 50% and 15%, respectively. At the same time, radial and tangential cell-wall thicknesses increase by 110% and 132%, respectively. Wood density exhibits an S-shape profile with a slight decrease of 10% at the beginning of a ring and an increase of 212% thereafter. Model simulations showed that wood density increase is mainly due to cell-wall thickening in tangential and radial directions as well as cell size reduction in radial direction. Simulations also showed that the knowledge of tracheid anatomical characteristics is not sufficient to fully explain wood density decrease at the beginning of earlywood.wood density / wood anatomy / wood quality / image analysis / Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Un modèle géométrique a été utilisé dans le but de modéliser les relations entre les variations de densité à l'intérieur du cerne et les caractéristiques anatomiques des trachéides. Un sapin de Douglas a été étudié en détail. Des images numériques de coupes anatomiques de 256 cernes ont été comparées aux profils de densité correspondants. Du bois initial au bois final, les diamètres radiaux et tangentiels des trachéides diminuent de 50 % et 15 % respectivement, pendant que les épaisseurs radiales et tangentielles des parois cellulaires augmentent de 110 % et 132 % respectivement. La densité du bois présente un profil en forme de S, avec une légère diminution de 10 % au début du cerne et une augmentation de 212 % ensuite. Le modèle a montré que l'augmentation de la densité est principalement due à l'épaississement des parois cellulaires dans les directions tangentielles et radiales et à la diminution du diamètre radial des cellules. ISSN 0300-9483.The use of X-ray densitometry for measuring tree rings makes it possible to consider the relations between climate and tree rings in a new light. Investigations so far have shown that it is the maximum density of the annual rings that provides the most important and best climatological information. Comparisons between density sequences are possible when the tree-ring samples come from ecologically similar sites. Site characteristics are expressed by six different tree-ring parameters. Relations between the maximum densities of various species from different regions are revealed by calculating the percentage of agreement. The growth rate of cell walls in latewood of all coniferous species from cool humid regions is limited mainly by summer temperatures. In Scotland, where the climate is cool-oceanic and relatively stable, the cell walls grow from June to October. In the subalpine zone of the Alps and the Rocky Mountains near the timber line growth takes place mainly in August and September. Maximum density in trees of temperate sites is also primarily influenced by the summer temperature. Minimum density shows the relationship to the xerothermic site characteristics. On dry sites cambial activity and cell wall growth in latewood are mainly limited by precipitation during the growth period.Samples from the subalpine zones (1500-2200 rn above sea level) between latitudes 45" and 50" North, i.e. those from the Western Carpathians, the Alps, and the Northern Appalachian Mountains, seem to form a unity. Samples from the oceanic region (20-600 m above sea level) between 52" and 58"N latitudes show a different and incoherent picture. Only the present low level density during 1950-1975 is evident at all sites investigated for the last 200 years.By cross-dating the annual tree-ring sequences of living trees with samples of timber taken from ancient houses a 700-year-long chronology has been developed for the Northern Prealps in Switzerland. An investigation was made of the effects of tracheid dimensions on variations in the maximum density of Picea glehnii Mast., which were associated with climatic changes. Radial cell diameter and the thickness of the tangential cell walls of the last-formed cells in 90 annual rings of nine trees with different annual ring widths were analyzed by image analysis. Correlations between maximum density and tracheid dimensions indicated that changes in maximum density were due mainly to changes in cell wall thickness of the last-formed cells in annual rings and were not due to changes in radial cell diameter. The effects of climatic factors on tracheid dimensions were examined by application of dendroclimatological techniques. A chronology of cell wall thickness that represented common signals among trees was established. Simple correlation and response function analyses of the chronology revealed that cell wall thickness was influenced positively by summer temperature and negatively by precipitation in August, and these responses were similar to those of maximum density. The study demonstrated that variations in maximum density were due to variations in the cell wall thickness of the lastformed cells, which varied depending on the weather in summer.
