Verdad inconveniente. Reacciones masculinas al movimiento de mujeres universitarias en la UNAM

Abstract

En México las colectivas de mujeres construyen interpretaciones sobre el entramado que subyace al tejido social que hace posible la violencia. Entre ellas, las colectivas universitarias consolidan una revuelta para evidenciar la dominación patriarcal que rige el funcionamiento de las universidades, en particular en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Los varones interpelados no reaccionan de manera empática, en tanto que las demandas de las mujeres se atienden con respuestas conservadoras. Este texto analiza esas respuestas y sus razones y concluye resaltando la importancia de una respuesta de parte de los varones a dicha problemática, tanto o más relevante que la reacción institucional.

Living with Violence: Men University Students Negotiate the Masculinity Mandate in Mexico

“…As a result of this unrest and the mobilization it has incited, sexual and other violences in the university, especially against women, have been positioned as a major issue to be discussed and tackled by the UNAM authorities and addressed by university communities. This has resulted in the implementation of mitigating measures by authorities, but has also found resistance in different forms, most notably from men (Inclán 2020). This attests to the resilience of the masculinity mandate, as many men perceive the limits that are trying to be imposed to several forms of violence as a challenge to the masculinity that for years has operated at the university (i.e., a form of masculinity that may discretionally limit and regulate exercises of violence, autonomously from feminine checks and balances).…”
