Abstract: The paper revisits the debate on verb raising in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) as well as the discussion on the impoverishment of BP verbal inflectional paradigm. It suggests that the weakening of the Agr system in BP is not sufficient to explain why the verb raises less in BP than in other Romance languages, from both theoretical and empirical points of view. This paper revisits the issue of verb raising in two closely related languages, namely Angolan Portuguese (AP) and Mozambican Portuguese (MP). Cinque’s (cartographic) hierarchy of adverbs is used to examine microvariation in these two varieties of Portuguese. The empirical data, gathered through experiments on acceptability rating tasks (to detect the position of the V(erb) in relation to adverbs) and cloze tests (to diagnose the adverbial classes which can be recovered by the elliptical VP), have been collected among university students in Luanda and Maputo, the capitals of Angola and Mozambique, respectively. The cutting points within the functional hierarchy where the V goes, be it mandatorily or optionally, are different in the two languages. In AP, the verb must raise past the frustrative aspect adverb (em vão/à toa ‘in vain’), while in MP the verb must raise to the left of the singular completive adverb (tudo ‘everything’). The main verb cannot raise past the AspTerminative adverb (já não/não mais ‘no longer’) in MP. In AP, it can optionally raise over the highest projection in the inflectional domain. Such a difference may explain the recovery of high adverbs in VP-ellipsis structures, only possible in AP. The corollary of the inter-linguistic study developed for Comparative Syntax is the adequacy of the cartographic démarche when it comes to establishment of strict boundaries in the study of microvariation among closely related grammars.

Adverbs and Functional Heads: a Cross-Linguistic perspective (Cinque, Guglielmo. 1999. Adverbs and functional heads: A cross-linguistic perspective. New York & Oxford: Oxford University Press)—one of the founding works of “Syntactic Cartography”—combines some of the developments in Syntactic Theory from the 1980s and 1990s with insightful contributions from Linguistic Typology. This paper has two interrelated goals. First, it aims to review the fundamental theses of Cinque’s monography of 1999—which are far from controversial among scholars working in Cartography—; at the same time it provides conceptual support to them. Secondly, it aims to explore some methodological tools of Syntactic Cartography presented and discussed by Cinque, Guglielmo. 1999. Adverbs and functional heads: A cross-linguistic perspective. New York & Oxford: Oxford University Press, namely the so-called precedence-and-transitivity tests—after a brief discussion on methodology used to recognise the functional categories, namely the criterion by Jackendoff, Ray. 1972. Semantic interpretation in generative grammar. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press—and the use of the hierarchies as tools to detect intra and interlinguistic variation. With regard to this latter issue, the paper gathers data from Brazilian Portuguese, Canadian English and Colombian Spanish on verb raising. The discussion of the data not only favours Cinque, Guglielmo. 2017. On the status of functional categories (heads and phrases). Language and Linguistics 18(4). 521–576 recent updates of his theoretical approach to the cartography of the clause but also shows how Cartography offers a natural scenario for a methodological approach to both micro and macro-variation.

Este artigo visa investigar as propriedades formais das clivadas canônicas do português brasileiro (PB). Tais sentenças são designadas para focalizar constituintes através de movimento A-barra e da presença da cópula e do complementizador para garantir ênfase ao constituinte focalizado. O principal aspecto formal das clivadas são as possibilidades de convergência do verbo ser com outros elementos da sentença em termos de concordância e tempo. O panorama padrão em PB seria a concordância da cópula com o foco e a harmonia temporal entre a mesma e o verbo temático. Por outro lado, o PB – mas não o português europeu (PE) – licencia clivadas que não apresentam tais convergências. Esse fenômeno levou alguns autores a defender que, nesse caso, a cópula está gramaticalizada como um item focalizador, já que estaria na forma invariável é. Forneceremos evidências para postularmos que não há gramaticalização envolvendo a cópula das clivadas do PB e proporemos que as clivadas canônicas possuem sempre uma cópula verbal, que projeta uma estrutura argumental IP, mesmo quando aparenta estar na forma invariável. O mesmo não é verificado nas clivadas é que, que apresentam o foco na posição inicial da sentença, que possuiriam cópula funcional.
