Venous thromboembolism in cancer patients: Still looking for answers (Review)

Abstract: Patients with cancer-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE) represent a real challenge in clinical practice. Patients with cancer have a greater risk both of VTE and bleeding. There are only a few studies regarding the therapeutic approach of VTE in patients with cancer, especially after cancer surgery, and on thromboprophylaxis during chemotherapy. Many of the anticoagulation therapy recommendations for cancer patients are extrapolated from trials that are not conducted in cancer cohorts. It is essential to … Show more

“…The cases with early cervical cancer treated primary by surgical approach should continue with adjuvant therapy in the presence of findings that suggests an increased risk of recurrence. The benefit of surgery compared with radiotherapy is the possibility of ovarian conservation through surgery avoiding premature menopause and offering possibilities for reproduction technologies (42).…”

“…However, systemic metastasis is not a contraindication to reconstruct the breast. A proper therapeutic management must be done [17,18]. In our clinic, we had one patient with stage IV breast cancer, with bone metastasis, who had chemoradiotherapy prior to the reconstruction.…”

“…Recently, Găman et al, [ 32 ] also found that oxidative stress levels were higher and thrombotic events were more frequent in ET patients who had an old age at diagnosis, higher haematocrit levels or leukocytosis. Further, Iorga et al, [ 33 ] reported that patients with cancer have a greater risk of both venous thromboembolism (VTE) and bleeding. A Danish retrospective study showed that patients that had VTE 1 year before the cancer diagnosis had a slightly increased risk of distant metastasis at the time of diagnosis.…”
