Vehicular Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks: Principals and Challenges

Abstract: The rapid increase of vehicular traffic and congestion on the highways began hampering the safe and efficient movement of traffic. Consequently, year by year, we see the ascending rate of car accidents and casualties in most of the countries. Therefore, exploiting the new technologies, e.g. wireless sensor networks, is required as a solution of reduction of these saddening and reprehensible statistics. This has motivated us to propose a novel and comprehensive system to utilize Wireless Sensor Networks for veh… Show more

“…Few advantages of WSN are reasonable cost, power capacity and small size. Applications using WSN are climate monitoring, battle field surveillance [20], air pollution monitoring [21], habitat monitoring, tactical surveillance, distributed computing, vehicular network [22], spying and so on. Tiny OS [23] is the standard sensor operating system used in sensor networks.…”

“…Knowledge of the real-time location of nodes is an hypothesis made by the majority of the protocols, algorithms and the applications in VANETs [1]. This is a very sensible supposition, because GPS receivers can be installed easily in vehicles, a number of which already comes with the technology.…”

“…Vehicular Ad Hoc Network consists of majority of the imperative elements of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) in which vehicles are arranged with several short-range and medium-range wireless communications [1]. In VANET two kinds of communication are hypothetical, they are, Vehicle-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-road side units, where the road side units could be a cellular base station.…”
