Simulation ofVehicle-to Vehicle (V2V) communication and connectivity is carried out. The main objective of the carried out V2Vcommunication simulation is to study the effect of route length, number of hops per route, attenuation related parameter and message size on energy consumption of transmitted bits per sent message. Mathematical modeling (using the original radio energy model), and analysis, is carried out to quantify and approximate the effect of attenuation related parameter (α) and Route Length (LR) on energy consumption of transmitted Basic Safety Message (BSM) for both, 256 Bytes and 320 Bytes size. The original energy radio model is expanded to include not only message size, but also the effect of number of hops on energy consumption. The work successfully proved the critical effect of α and number of hops on energy consumption for a fixed BSM size and the effect of α on the transitional characteristics of routes as a function of number of hops. It is clear from the simulation that α has an adverse effect on consumed energy for transmitted BSMs and also has a marked effect on routes, where any value of α above 3 will lead to energy depletion among, other negative effects on communicating devices.

New approach to manage congestion using vehicular communication is presented in this work. The research work using MATLAB simulation, tracked communicating vehicles travelling on roads with constant registration of changes in routes, number of hops, and energy consumed as a function of travelled distances. The area of travel and simulation is divided into blocks or zones to enable sufficient allocation and distribution of Road Side Units (RSUs) that are used to relay communication signals and transmission of Basic Safety Messages (BSMs). The successfully concluded simulation is based on the assumption that as congestion occurs, the number of hops per route and associated energy consumption per transmitted packets will change patterns in terms of hops, routes and consumed energy as traffic passes from low to smooth (optimal) to high density (congestion) states, where at the start of congestion, vehicles start to slow down and become closer to each other in a two dimensional space. The output is used as input to traffic status pattern characterization algorithm (management system) that uses the data to indicate the start of traffic accumulation, thus pre-emptive measures can be taken to avoid congestion and reduction in mobility. The presented analysis proved that it is possible to predict congestion as a function of both hops sequences and consumed energy, depending on the hops pattern which is shown to be symmetric in the case of optimum traffic that flows smoothly. The analysis also showed that when congestion starts to occur, asymmetric hops pattern occurs with hops sequences elements switch and swap places within the identified pattern. Further analysis and polynomial curve fitting proved that congestion control and smooth traffic management using the proposed approach is achievable.

Background: The exponential increase in pattern of vehicles on the roads demands a need to develop a vehicular infrastructure that may not only ease congestions and provide a better experience but also pivot the levels of safety among users. The development of wireless technology has made it convenient for machines, devices and vehicles to interact with one another. The efficacy of this wireless communications relies on utilising current and available technology to enable information to be shared efficiently. In the wake of the available advancement in wireless technology, a new dynamic spectrum management (DSM) in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication that coexists with the existing Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network to increase the throughput in V2V communication is proposed. This will provide some solutions to enable a more efficient vehicular infrastructure. Methods: This paper focuses on the utilization of DSM in V2V communications by selecting an appropriate frequency band through the selection of available licensed and unlicensed frequency bands for vehicles. Further investigations are done to identify the effect of interference in the dynamic spectrum by observing the path loss, SINR, and the throughput with various interfering users. Results: The results show that the performance of the proposed DSM augments a significant improvement in the overall throughput and the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) value is reduced by up to 60% when compared to the fixed spectrum allocation. Conclusions: Although the dynamic spectrum is still affected by the interference from the existing cellular users, the throughput of the dynamic spectrum remains sufficient to transmit the information to other vehicles.
