The article discusses the use of video recordings in the reconstruction of road accidents. Many drivers use in-car digital video recorders (DVR), so called dashboard cameras, to register the situation in front of or behind the car while driving. Such recording can be in some situations an important evidence when determining liability of the road collision. However, in most such cases the video recording is analyzed only from a qualitative point of view, while the article shows that a lot of quantitative information, such as vehicle speeds, accelerations, or the directions of their movements, can also be obtained from the video recording. The selected methods of quantitative analysis of a video recording are here presented. Furthermore, attention is paid to the problems of image analysis, that experts deal with during accident reconstruction. It is indicated that video recordings should be analyzed according to different procedures depending on the situation they present. It is also discussed the influence of recording quality (resolution, distortion, image sharpness, recording speed and others) on the usefulness of the recording for obtaining from it the quantitative information. Finally, the method for estimating the uncertainty of the results is presented. The article confirms that it is possible to determine the chosen parameters of vehicle motion based on an analysis of the DVR recording.

All over the world, the vehicles introduced now into the market are usually provided with EDRs (Event Data Recorders), intended to measure and record the parameters that characterise the vehicle motion in the pre-, during-, and post-accident phases. The EDRs are to facilitate the description and reconstruction of possible road accidents. They are patterned on aircraft “black boxes” (flight recorders). Many of them have simplified design, disregarding three (of six) vector components that describe the motion of the vehicle body solid. In the paper presented, the authors used simulation models built by themselves to represent motor vehicle dynamics and the reconstruction of vehicle trajectory and velocities based on records obtained from two EDR types: “aircraft” one (EDR1) and “simplified” one (EDR2). Using a simulation method, they examined the impact of the said simplifications mentioned above on the quality of reconstruction of vehicle motion for four typical manoeuvres in road traffic. The calculation results obtained for input data adopted to rep-resent a medium-class passenger car have shown that the simplifications may cause considerable reconstruction errors. This particularly applies to the manoeuvres where significant changes took place in the roll and pitch angles of the vehicle body solid (to which the EDR was fixed) or where the changes were characterised by absence of symmetry in the parameters that describe the manoeuvre and by the constant sign of the vehicle body roll angles.

Selected methods of quantitative analysis of video recordings are presented, which can be used to analyse images from both fixed cameras (highways, intersections, etc.) and vehicle-mounted cameras. The article deals with the use of video recordings in the reconstruction of road traffic accidents. Many drivers use digital video recorders (DVRs), the so-called dashboard cameras, which record the situation in front of or behind the car while driving. There are also many places where cameras are installed, such as highways, intersections, etc. In some situations, such recordings can be important evidence in establishing liability for a road traffic accident. However, in most of these cases, the video recording is only analysed qualitatively, while the article shows that a lot of quantitative information can also be obtained from the video recording, such as speeds, accelerations and directions of movement of the vehicles. Analysing the image of the camera moving with the vehicle is more difficult, but possible thanks to the analysis methods presented in the article. The reconstruction of a road traffic accident event using the presented methods can be carried out on the basis of recordings made with the help of recording devices that capture images of different quality. It is not necessary to know the parameters of the camera recording the image. However, knowing these parameters makes the analysis much easier. In addition, reference was made to the problems of image analysis that experts have to deal with when reconstructing accidents. It was pointed out that video recordings should be analysed using different methods depending on the situation they represent. The influence of the quality of the recording (resolution, distortion, image sharpness, recording speed, etc.) on the usefulness of the recording for obtaining quantitative information is also discussed. Finally, a method for estimating the uncertainty of the results is presented. The article confirms that it is possible to determine selected parameters of vehicle movement based on the analysis of the DVR recorder.
