The improvement of the energetic efficiency in vehicular systems is a growing demand when developing new technologies for the automotive sector. Laws and regulatory standards that aim at the reduction of fuel consumption, such as the Brazilian INOVAR-AUTO, create constrains in order to improve the overall efficiency and reduce the emissions of new produced automobiles. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) became an alternative to achieve these goals, by adding electricity as an auxiliary propulsion source. Several surveys have revealed the advantages of hybrid configurations, which demonstrated significant fuel savings resulting from shifting the engine operation point to regions of lower consumption. This study evaluates the impact of the conversion of a 1.0L vehicle into a plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV), by means of coupling electric motors supplied by lead-acid battery to the vehicle rear wheels (Parallel HEV Configuration). Thus, by means of simulations, this work aims to investigate the impact that the auxiliary electric system can produce in the fuel consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases when the vehicle is submitted to the standard Brazilian drive cycles NBR 6601 and NBR 7024. INTRODUTION The number of people who are adept to the means of private transportation has increased over the last decades. This number is strongly correlated with the number of automobiles in use on the roads around the world. If it is assumed that the automakers will follow on producing the majority of the cars equipped with conventional combustion engine, the fossil energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will keep growing [1]. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) are gaining attention due to their ability to reduce gasoline/diesel consumption by using electricity from the grid as an alternative energy source [2]. If this energy is produced in a clean way and transmitted efficiently to the PHEVs' battery, it is possible to say that these vehicles are more environmental friendly than the conventional ones, considering all the resources spent per kilometer.

The hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) became an alternative to reduce the fuel consumption. The HEV parallel configuration consists of two separated drive systems, such as the engine/powertrain system and an extra electric motors (EMs) system. The addition of an extra electrical power changes the engine operation point and consequently the fuel consumption. However, there are many ways to introduce this electrical power source as a secondary drive system. In this paper, two parallel HEV configurations are studied in a condition where the conventional engine/powertrain system, coupled to the vehicle front wheels, is the main power source and two different configurations of EMs drive system, coupled to the rear wheels, are auxiliary power sources. The first one consists of two in-wheel motors coupled directly to the vehicle rear wheels and the other one is an EM coupled to a differential system similar to the existent in the conventional vehicle powertrain. The aim of this paper is to simulate and compare the HEV behavior with the conventional vehicle behavior, both of them running in the Brazilian urban drive cycle NBR6601, evaluating differences in performance, fuel consumption and battery discharging when applicable. The growing demand for lowering emissions leads to an effort to enhance internal combustion engines performance through new engineering solutions. The functionalization of surfaces applied to crankshaft bearings represents one of the possible solutions to achieve this balance. In this method, a micrometric tailored texture is produced on the surface to optimize the fluid dynamics in the bearing, increase load capacity, bearing stability and lower general operational losses. The better performance allows downsizing these bearings, enabling a possible significant reduction on weight and fuel consumption. The project is a partnership between the School of Engineering of Sao Carlos (EESC-USP) and the ThyssenKrupp Company. It applies a new process developed in cooperation with the Laboratory for Advanced Process and Sustainability (LAPRAS). In the proposed methodology, the desired texture is inscribed in the crankshaft bearings during the grinding process, with same precision and quality associated with this vastly applied manufacturing process. For operational evaluation, tribological tests will be carried out and finally in an instrumented engine evaluation will be performed.
