Vegetative and Environmental Components in a Secondary Riparian Forest in the Southern Plateau of Santa Catarina, Brazil

Abstract: This study investigated the vegetation and environmental variable of fragments at different successional stages in a secondary riparian forest in the municipality of Ponte Alta, Santa Catarina state, Brazil (27°29'00" S and 50°17'11" W, WGS84), aiming to list priority variables for monitoring forest succession in riparian forests. For this, two areas were identified: "Reference" (conserved secondary forest) and "Restoration" (secondary forest under passive restoration). The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) i… Show more

“…As in the present work, the biological invasion by the Pinus genus was verified by several authors in AF (e.g. Formento et al 2004; Emer & Fonseca 2011; Ferreira et al 2013; Spiazzi et al 2017; Stedille et al 2018a). Therefore, the use of indicator species as ecological indicators allows us to investigate the occupation pattern by alien species at each site and indicates the need for intervention and management of the environment to be restored.…”

“…The same goes for areas which need to be restored within exotic tree plantation landscapes (e.g. Zanini & Ganade 2005;Ferreira et al 2012Ferreira et al , 2013Schorn et al 2013;Scariot et al 2014;Dalla Rosa et al 2015;Stedille et al 2018aStedille et al , 2018b. Therefore, knowing the composition and structure of the tree community together as taxonomic groups (i.e.…”

“…The diversity values from the arboreal community of SJRB were higher than those commonly reported in other studies about this forest typology (GONÇALVES et al, 2018;STEDILLE et al, 2018). However, these values approach those found in forest areas that occur along water courses (NASCIMENTO et al, 2011), confirming the high floristic heterogeneity in the area due to considerable environmental variation.…”

“…In addition, the number of species found in the US is considered high when compared to results obtained in other studies carried out in riparian forest remnants (NASCIMENTO et al, 2011;STEDILLE et al, 2018). The highest species richness is also verified in the LS, even though studies about understory plant communities are scarcer (BARDDAL et al, 2004).…”

“…The family with the highest species richness was Myrtaceae, in both surveys. Several studies have pointed out that this family is the most diverse tree species in Mixed Ombrophilous Forests (Higuchi et al 2012, Higuchi et al 2013, Negrini et al 2014, Souza et al 2014, Marcon et al 2014, Ansolin et al 2016, Cubas et al 2016, Gonçalves et al 2018, Stedille et al 2018.…”
