“…Initially by paleobotanists at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology (Ouyang and Li, 1980;Ouyang, 1982Ouyang, , 1986. Regained interest for these sections led to numerous stratigraphical and paleontological studies led by the group of the China University of Geosciences Wuhan (Wang and Yin, 2001;Zhao, 2003;Zhang et al, 2006;Yin et al, 2007;Yu et al, 2007Yu et al, , 2008Yu et al, , 2010Yu et al, , 2015Peng and Shi, 2009 and references therein), and again by the researchers of the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology (Fang, 2004;Shen et al, 2011;Zhang et al, 2015).…”

“…As the placement of the PTB at the Meishan GSSP is defined based on First Appearance Datum (FAD) of the conodont Hindeodus parvus, a strictly marine fossil, it is not possible to directly define the PTB on land until a detailed correlation has been performed. Currently, there are two opposed opinions, the view of researchers at the China University of Geosciences Wuhan (Wang and Yin, 2001;Zhao, 2003;Zhang et al, 2006;Yin et al, 2007;Yu et al, 2007Yu et al, , 2008Yu et al, , 2010Yu et al, , 2015Peng and Shi, 2009 and references therein), who estimated the PTB within the upper part of the Xuanwei Formation, and that of researchers at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology (Shen et al, 2011;Zhang et al, 2015), who estimated the PTB much higher, within the lower part of the Dongchuan Formation. No clear criteria exist for the definition of the PTB in the terrestrial realm, and correlations have been based on different criteria by different groups of researchers.…”

“…3C). The proposed Permian to Early Triassic land-to-sea paleoenvironmental reconstruction (Peng et al 2005;Yu et al, 2015;Bercovici et al, 2015) must be reconsidered based on regional tectonic and stratigraphic analyses. The inferred contemporaneity between the marine and terrestrial extinction events, recently questioned in the South African Karoo Basin (Gastaldo et al, 2015(Gastaldo et al, , 2017, must therefore be also re-evaluated in southern China.…”

“…In fact, abnormal climatic conditions observed from marine records, such as global warming, wildfire, and enhanced weathering, would have had a severe impact on the terrestrial ecosystem and synchronously caused great losses of vertebrates and plants (Benton, 1985;Retallack et al, 1996Retallack et al, , 2011Retallack et al, 2003;Benton et al, 2004;Retallack, 2013;Benton and Newell, 2014;Yu et al, 2015). Widespread braided river systems are believed to have resulted from the combination of the decreased vegetation coverage and enhanced terrestrial weathering (Newell et al, 1999;Ward et al, 2000).…”
