Vegetarian Diets and Blood Pressure

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Previous studies have suggested an association between vegetarian diets and lower blood pressure (BP), but the relationship is not well established. OBJECTIVE To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled clinical trials and observational studies that have examined the association between vegetarian diets and BP.

“…Compared with an omnivorous diet, a vegetarian diet is rich in fiber, magnesium, Fe 3+ , folic acid, vitamins C and E, omega‐6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, phytochemicals, and antioxidants but low in cholesterol; total fat and saturated fatty acids; sodium; Fe 2+ ; zinc, vitamins A, B 12 , and D11; and especially omega‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.
