Vegetable and fruit juice enhances antioxidant capacity and regulates antioxidant gene expression in rat liver, brain and colon

Abstract: To explore the effect of fruit and vegetable (FV) juice on biomarkers of oxidative damage and antioxidant gene expression in rats, 36 adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into control, low FV juice dosage or high FV juice dosage treatment groups. The rats were given freshly extracted FV juice or the same volume of saline water daily for five weeks. After intervention, serum and tissues specimens were collected for biomarker and gene expression measurement. FV juice intervention increased total antioxid… Show more

“…Modulation of GST expression by bioactive compounds from plants (phenolic and carotenoid compounds) is also related to the Keap1/Nrf2 system, nuclear translocation of Nrf2 and its interaction with the ARE sequence. 39 The significant increase in GST activity in the MPD group (Fig. 6) could be a result of adaptive responses to oxidized molecules such as peroxides.…”

“…This indicates that the mango‐supplemented diet was able to regulate GSTp1 at a transcriptional and functional level. “…As far as hepatic TAC in the liver of healthy rats is concerned, Yuan et al [41] administered a mixed fruit and vegetable juice for 5 weeks and reported an increase in liver TAC. Our result was similar regarding the Cr50 group.…”

“…The most common types of BACs in the majority of fruit juices are polyphenols, which are antioxidants with anti-inflammatory activities. Polyphenols bind free radicals, participate in the inhibition of pro-oxidative processes, and significantly influence chronic inflammation or lessen the burden of various medical pathologies, such as cardiovascular diseases, forms of cancers [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ], and lipid oxidation in plasma [ 16 , 18 ]. There is a large body of evidence showing that polyphenols are true aids to human health and wellbeing; however, there is controversy associated with their utilization in food production.…”
