vChecker: an application-level demand-based co-scheduler for improving the performance of parallel jobs in Xen

Abstract: Big data analysis requires the speedup of parallel computing. However, in the virtualized systems, the power of parallel computing is not fully exploited due to the limit of current VMM schedulers. Xen, one of the most popular virtualization platforms, has been widely used by industry to host parallel job. In practice, the virtualized systems are expected to accommodate both parallel jobs and serial jobs, and resource contention between virtual machines results in severe performance degradation of the parallel… Show more

“…These developments underscore the ongoing evolution and growing impact of virtualization technologies. They offer not only practical solutions for managing computer resources more effectively but also open up new possibilities for innovation across various fields (Jiang et al, 2022;Khakimov et al, 2022;Li et al, 2022). As these trends continue, we can expect to see even more creative and efficient uses for virtual machines in the future, further solidifying the role of virtualization in modern computing.…”

“…Therefore, the power of parallel computing is not fully exploited in Xen due to its ineffective scheduling of parallel jobs. This paper [22] presents an applicationlevel co-scheduler, called vChecker, which is able to coschedule the tasks in a parallel job onto multiple CPU cores in a computer, and therefore mitigates the performance degradation of parallel jobs running in Xen. vChecker takes into account the number of CPU cores and the demand of parallel jobs, and assists the credit scheduler in Xen to schedule parallel jobs.…”
