Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)-like immunoreactivity in the human sympathetic ganglia

Abstract: Vasoactive intestinal peptide immunoreactive (VIP-IR) nerve fibres and terminals, neurons and small granule containing cells were observed in human lumbal sympathetic ganglia. Electron-microscopically VIP-IR was localized in the large dense-cored vesicles in nerve terminals and on the membranes of the Golgi complexes in the neurons. A small population of principal ganglion cells was surrounded by VIP-IR nerve terminals. Most of these neurons contained acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme but were not tyrosine hy… Show more

“…In this study, single VIP-IR neurons were TH-negative and ChAT-negative, whereas TH-immunoreactivity in VIP-immunoreactive neurons of the human www.fhc.viamedica.pl lumbar ganglia [26] and porcine SCG [23,25] were not identified. The coexistence of DBH-and VIP-IR neurons was not identified in the paravertebral and prevertebral sympathetic ganglia of the cat [27], while the colocalization of DBH-and VIP-immunoreactivity was indicated only in neurons of thoracic ganglia in the pig [24].…”

“…It has been demonstrated previously that VIP-IR is present in part of the cholinergic neurons of h u m a n paravertebral ganglia (Jarvi et al, 1988), which innervate the sweat glands (Lundberg et al, 1980;Vaalasti et al, 1985). Thus ENK-IR nerve terminals are not, at least directly, involved with vascular control, which is effected by the NPY-IR and TH-IR neurons, but may have a function in the regulation of sweating and body temperature via cholinergic neurons.…”

“…Cholinergic marker has been documented in the STG of the sow (Panu et al, 2001;Ragionieri et al, 2008), cat (Lindh et al, 1989), rat (Morales et al, 1995;Schafer et al, 1997Schafer et al, , 1998, guinea-pig (Elfvin et al, 1993) and man (Jarvi et al, 1989;Masliukov and Timmermans, 2004). The principal function of cholinergic innervation in the uro-genital system is the presynaptic inhibition of the adrenergic excitatory neurotransmission (Sj€ ostrand, 1965;Sann et al, 1995;Anderson et al, 1997;Saenz de Tejada et al, 2000).…”
