“…Increased expression of type XI collagen was reported in the twy mouse, where our group postulated the R. Sato et al potential roles of types I and II collagens in the progression of ossifed PLL plaque in the twy mouse. 2 Although a number of authors have described origins, 9,12,17,19,26,31 perhaps only the studies of Hirakawa et al, 11 Yonemori et al, 33 Ueno et al, 30 and our own, 2,8 including the present study, were dedicated to illustrating the histological properties of the OPLL process.…”

“…SSIFICATION of the posterior longitudinal ligament 4,5,20,30 of the spine may eventually cause serious spinal cord compromise. Ossification of the paravertebral tissue, including the spinal ligaments, may be evident in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, but in contrast to this, OPLL develops in isolation, frequently exhibiting in-significant ossification in the paravertebral areas.…”

“…We first observed that these hypertrophic chondrocytes expressed VEGF in the cytoplasm in endochondral ossication induced by rhBMP-2. Ueno et al reported that chondrocytes expressed VEGF during heterotopic bone formation induced from grafted periosteum in the rabbit followed by vascular invasion in VEGF-positive areas, and showed that this was related to the induction of vascularization of cartilage in grafted periosteum (Ueno et al, 2003). The periosteal grafting resulted in the proliferation and differentiation of various cells during the process of endochondral ossification, as also occurs in bone formation induced by rhBMP-2.…”

“…Ueno et al . reported that VEGF is related to the induction of vascularization and may work cooperatively with BMP‐4 in the process of endochondral ossification induced from autogenously grafted periosteum. Takehiro et al .…”
