Variation of active constituents and antioxidant activity in Scabiosa tschiliensis Grunning from different stages

Abstract: It has been claimed that inflorescences of Grunning (ST) may prevent liver diseases because of its higher chlorogenic acid. There was scant information on the phytochemical profiles and antioxidant activities of the whole plant from different growing stages. The changes of active-compounds and antioxidant activities of ST from three growing stages were studied. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were analyzed and ranged from 0.00 to 140.03 mg GAE/g and 9.10 to 460.01 mg RE/g, respectively. The pre-flowering… Show more

“…These results also validate their traditional use in several medicine systems [19]. Furthermore, the antioxidant capacity of S. tschilliensis was recently proved by other authors [25]. In the beginning of this year, another medicinal plant, S. stellata , was investigated in order to find its antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-tyrosinase power.…”

“…The herein reported results are similar to the previous ones, moreover the two extra assays herein performed also corroborate that antioxidant active metabolites can be produced by this species. Furthermore, there is evidence that other Scabiosa species extracts have antioxidant active [ 17 , 18 ]. These bioassays guide us to perform the phytochemical study of the EAF and n -BF fractions.…”

“…Accordingly, the aerial part of S. columbaria was used to treat diphtheria in Spain [ 11 ] and the flowers and the leaves of Scabiosa stellata L were used as a cracked heel remedy in Moroccan tradition [ 12 ]. Moreover, several biological proprieties, such as antibacterial [ 13 , 14 , 15 ] and antioxidant [ 16 , 17 ] activities, were accredited to Scabiosa species. The health benefits of Scabiosa are often attributed to its content in phenols [ 18 ] and iridoid glucosides [ 19 ].…”
