Variation in the radon concentrations and outdoor gamma radiation levels in relation to different geological formations in the thermal regions of Bursa, Turkey

Abstract: Spring waters used as spas and their region may contain significant amounts of natural radionuclides. The main sources of exposure are the inhalation of radon and its decay products released from the water and soil and terrestrial gamma-radiation. In order to evaluate the potential risk of thermal regions in Bursa, located in the impact area of the NAF (North Anatolian Fault), radon and thoron concentrations in soil gas, radon concentrations in thermal waters and outdoor gamma radiation levels were measured in… Show more

“…Figure 4 shows the AlphaGUARD with the AquaKIT set-up for water measurements. Detailed experimental processes and methods for waters and soil gas were given in our previous study [29]. The outdoor gamma radiation levels were measured by a portable dose rate meter (Fluke Biomedical) (connected with a 489-55 model 1.5″ x1.5″ NaI(Tl) scintillation detector), as described by Akkaya et al [29].…”

“…The containers were closed and stored for a month in order to achieve the radioactive equilibrium between 226 Ra and its daughter element ( 222 Rn) [9]. 40 The outdoor gamma radiation levels were measured by a portable dose rate meter (Fluke Victoreen survey meter, connected with a 489-55 model 1.5 × 1.5 NaI(Tl) scintillation detector, optically coupled to PMT, as described by Akkaya et al [10].…”
