Variation in structural styles within fold-and-thrust belts: Insights from field mapping, cross-sections balancing, and 2D-kinematic modelling in the Jura mountains (Eastern France)

“…Consequently, a geometric restoration or forward model may be formally admissible (Elliott, 1983) but physically impossible. To constrain the deep structural styles of fold-and-thrust belts, a valid structural geology interpretation should be consistent with available outcrop and subsurface data (exploration well and seismic data), deformation conditions within of the study area, the mechanical stratigraphy, the occurrence and depth of different décollement horizons, and the presence of inherited structures (Balestra et al, 2019;Butler, 1983;Cooper & Trayner, 1986;Dahlstrom, 1969;Granado, Roca, Strauss, Pelz, & Muñoz, 2019;Hossack, 1979;Smeraglia, Fabbri, & Choulet, 2021;Tavani et al, 2018).
