Variation in Peperomia pellucida growth and secondary metabolism after rhizobacteria inoculation

Abstract: Peperomia pellucida L. Kunth is a herb well-known for its secondary metabolites (SM) with biological potential. In this study, the variations in the SM of P. pellucida during association with rhizobacteria were evaluated. Plants were inoculated with Enterobacter asburiae and Klebsiella variicola, which were identified by sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The data were evaluated at 7, 21, and 30-day post inoculation (dpi). Plant-bacteria symbiosis improved plant growth and weight. Total phenolic content and phen… Show more

“…For instance, the source, stage of development, and seasonality of the plants used to obtain the extracts have been shown to impact their antimicrobial properties (Chouhan et al, 2017;Costa et al, 2022;Gourich et al, 2022). Furthermore, the composition of these extracts, specifically the presence of phenolic compounds and their derivatives, fatty acids, terpenes, and other secondary metabolites, can also play a role in their antimicrobial activity (Altun & Yapici, 2022;Alves et al, 2022). Moreover, the volatility of plant derivatives, particularly EOs, can significantly influence the results of standard microplate-based assays, as reported by Houdkova et al (2020).…”

“…The total phenolics (TP) concentration in the ethyl acetate extracts was determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteu procedure [44,45]. The extracts were solubilized in methanol at an initial concentration of 20 mg.mL −1 and diluted with water.…”

“…Secondly, it can be cultivated with several modification methods, from hydroponic techniques, which can overcome the limited land issue, to biotechnology techniques to increase the yield of the compounds of interest. For instance, the polyphenolic content and the volatile oils are the compounds responsible for biological activities in the extract that can be improved by inoculating P. pellucida with Enterobacter asburiae and Klebsiella variicola (Alves et al, 2022). Nevertheless, postharvest management for this plant would be challenging since the herb contains a lot of water, so it is easy to rot if not handled properly.…”
