Variation in bioactive compounds in some seaweeds from Abo Qir bay, Alexandria, Egypt

Abstract: This study aims to assess the bioactive compounds and antioxidant activities of three selected seaweeds [Cladophora pellucida (Chlorophyta), Padina tetrastromatica (Phaeophyta) and Laurencia papillosa (Rhodophyta)] collected from Abo Qir bay, Alexandria, Egypt. L. papillosa demonstrated the greatest DPPH radical scavenging activity (52.1 ± 1.23 %) and β carotene content (3675.6 ± 134.6 IU/100 g) in comparison with the other seaweed species. The highest contents of phenol (0.26 ± 0.005 mg/g DW) and flavonoid (5… Show more

“…Alternatively, carotenoids content was fluctuated among algal groups with the highest in the red Corallina and the lowest in the green Ulva species. These findings were in accordance with (Chandraprabha et al, 2012;Valentina et al, 2015;Ismail et al, 2016). According to (Plaza et al, 2010) pigments help in cell communications and human health maintenance, have probable antimicrobial activities and promising applications in food and pharmaceutical fields.…”

“…The content of β-carotene was also significantly different between species at P ≤ 0.05. These findings were in agreement with (Zubia et al, 2007;Ismail et al, 2016). Natural antioxidants such as vitamins, polyphenols and β-carotene in higher plants were used to capture reactive oxygen species (RDS) which cause lipid peroxidation.…”

“…hexane, chloroform, ethanol, methanol, acetone and water were used to extract the antimicrobial material from such seaweeds. Compounds with cytostatic, antiviral, anthelminthic, antifungal, bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities have been detected in green, brown and red seaweeds with a comparable promising results with authentic antibiotics (Newman et al, 2003;Manikandan et al, 2011;Osman et al, 2013;Ismail et al, 2016).…”

“…Seaweeds are referred to a valuable source of protein, elements, dietary fibers, vitamins, essential amino acids and they contain various polysaccharides, including alginate, cellulose and laminarin (Ismail et al, 2016;Lyu et al, 2016). Sargassum are exceptional dietary sources of proteins, carbohydrates, trace minerals and other bioactive compounds (Cabrita et al, 2016;Telles et al, 2018).…”
