-The objective of this work was to evaluate the tensile strength, friability, aggregation, and the physical fractions of soil organic matter of a Rhodic Hapludox cultivated with sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). The treatments consisted of one, three, and five years of cultivation of sugarcane, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. As a reference, a native forest adjacent to the cultivation area, with soil and relief characteristics similar to those of the cultivation areas, was used. Deformed samples were collected at 0.00-0.05, 0.05-0.10, and 0.10-0.20-m soil depths, for the determination of the soil physical attributes and for the physical fractionation of particle-size and density of the organic matter. The physical attribute evaluations were able to detect changes in the structural quality of the Oxisol, which resulted from the sugarcane cultivation. In comparison with the native forest, the stability and tensile strength of the aggregates decreased with the time of sugarcane cultivation. Tensile strength increased with soil depth, proportionally to the reduction of total soil organic carbon content. Soil preparation and straw burning reduce the input of fresh organic matter into the soil and accelerate the decomposition of the labile organic matter compartment, with negative consequences to soil physical properties over time.Index terms: Saccharum officinarum, organic carbon, organic matter fractionation, soil physical quality. Resistência tênsil, friabilidade, agregação e frações físicas da matéria orgânica de um Latossolo Vermelho cultivado com cana-de-açúcarResumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a resistência tênsil, a friabilidade, a agregação e as frações físicas da matéria orgânica de um Latossolo Vermelho cultivado com cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum officinarum). Os tratamentos consistiram de um, três e cinco anos de cultivo de cana-de-açúcar, no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Como referência, utilizou-se uma mata nativa, adjacente à área de cultivo, com características de solo e relevo similares às das áreas de cultivo. Foram coletadas amostras deformadas à profundidade de 0,00-0,05, 0,05-0,10 e 0,10-0,20 m, para determinação dos atributos físicos do solo e para o fracionamento físico densimétrico e granulométrico da matéria orgânica. As avaliações dos atributos físicos foram capazes de detectar alterações da qualidade estrutural do Latossolo resultantes do cultivo de cana-de-açúcar. Em comparação à mata nativa, a estabilidade e a resistência tênsil dos agregados diminuíram com o tempo de cultivo da cana-de-açúcar. A resistência tênsil aumentou com a profundidade no solo, proporcionalmente à redução dos teores de carbono orgânico total. ABSTRACT:The objective of this study was to evaluate carbon input in labile and stable fractions in an ARGISOL of northwestern Brazil under different land use systems. Use systems being evaluated include: forest -MA (reference), agrosilvopasture -TCP (teak, cocoa and pasture); agroforest -TC (teak and cocoa); teak forest at 8 and 5 years -T8 and T5, and pasture -PA. In each system three furrows were made at depths of 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm and 10-20 cm. An area consisting of native vegetation (forest) adjacent to the experiment was sampled and used as control treatment. The use systems MA, T8 and T5 had higher levels of total organic carbon (COT) and the MA system had higher levels of labile carbon (CL) than the other systems, with the exception of TC at a depth of 10-20 cm. In the MA system, COT levels were higher in comparison to use systems TCP, TC and PA while CL levels were higher than the levels observed in use systems TCP and TC. In most cases being analyzed, CL levels were lower than COT levels, therefore this trait can be used as an indicator to assess anthropogenic changes relating to the maintenance or condition of soil organic matter.Key words: Soil compartments, Amazonia, lability. Changes in the soil structural quality have caused alterations in root growth and agricultural yield. With the purpose of finding critical values of physical parameters and alternative, viable and suitable ways of minimize the soil degradation, this study aimed at quantifying aggregate tensile strength (TS), friability (F), bull density (Bd), total porosity (Tp), macroporosity (Ma), penetration resistance (PR) and total organic carbon (TOC). Relations were established to estimate the structural quality of some parameters of an Ultisol under different uses. The study was carried out on a farm, in the rural area of RS, inserted in the Arroio Moreira waterbasin, Brazil. Disturbed and undisturbed samples were collected from the 0.00 to 0.10 m layer. Regarding TS and soil use, 900 samples were selected, totalling 2700 aggregates. Undisturbed samples (135) were collected for the evaluation of Bd, porosity and PR. The TOC was quantified using 45 aggregates through the dry combustion method. All physical parameters with exception of F are important in monitoring the structural quality.The lowest values of TS, PR and Bd were verified in the soil under fallow, and the highest ones in the soil under pasture. An inverse relation between TS and TOC and between Bd and TOC was verified. Critical values of Bd and TS to crop development might be estimated from the PR.
