VARIABLES AFFECTING ESTABLISHMENT OF SCHEDULE‐INDUCED ATTACK ON PICTORIAL TARGETS IN WHITE KING PIGEONS1

Abstract: White King pigeons exposed to food schedules before introduction of a colored photograph of a pigeon showed sustained schedule-induced attack on that image; additional birds given an early introduction to both the photograph and the schedule subsequently attacked the image at lower rates. Other pigeons attacked a second photograph of a pigeon regardless of whether it was introduced early or late. The late-introduction procedure was also effective in establishing attack on a projected image of a conspecific. Th… Show more

“…Preexposure to baseline conditions does not affect the occurrence of induced drinking (e.g., Roper & Posadas-Andrews, 1981;Roper, 1980a), but there is some evidence that it retards or prevents the appearance of induced aggression (Looney, Cohen, & Yoburn, 1976;Looney & Dove, 1978). Presumably, preexposure to nonschedule baseline conditions results in habituation to the chewing-or aggressionprovoking stimulus.…”

“…Induced aggression is responsive to refinements of procedure (e.g., Looney & Cohen, 1978;Looney, Cohen, & Yoburn, 1976), and the same may prove to be true of induced chewing. However, it is possible that the differences between chewing, aggression, and drinking are not just procedural artifacts, and next we discuss an alternative interpretation in the context of the effects of food omission.…”

“…Although several different methods of intruding the target during a daily test session were used (as described below), the general testing procedure was as follows: A pair of birds was placed in the chamber at approximately 1600 hr, and daily testing was begun the next morning. During testing the fluorescent chamber light was turned off for the duration of the target presentation (5 or 15 min/day) to ensure a clear image and to obtain stimulus conditions similar to those used in schedule-induced aggression studies [Looney et a], 1976;Cohen et a], 19791. During most test sessions, the pigeons' behavior in the area of the nest bowl and screen was video monitored.…”
