“…In the same vein, cord separation time had a mean of 7.54 ±2.37 days [28], and other authors also averaged 7.54±1.56 days [29]. Previous and thorough research has reported a mean of 6.58±2.16 days [30], as well as the finding of 6.1 ± 2.1 days [31] and a mean of 6.6 days [32]. However, this result was in contrast with research conducted in Bangladesh [33,34], reported shorter umbilical cord separation times with mean results of 4.83±2.05 and 4.78±1.82, respectively.…”

“…However, more commonly, as a consequence of cross-infection, SSSS infections tend to occur in outbreak clusters (29,51,52). During the 1980s, several papers were published showing that the use of antiseptics such as chlorhexidine on neonatal umbilical stumps delayed the time to cord separation (26,142,227,272). Because of the resulting increase in community midwives' workload due to the delay in cord separation, as well as rare isolated cases of hexachlorophane toxicity causing spongiform myelinopathy after percutaneous absorption (10,237), hospitals have gradually stopped using antiseptic umbilical cord care.…”

“…They found that mothers had similar comfort with both alcohol and air drying regimens and experienced relief with cord separation. Salariya and Kowbus (1988) and Barr (1984) also conducted studies to examine cord separation and treatment effectiveness, and they reported anecdotal observations that mothers rarely demonstrated enthusiasm about cord care procedures and that some indicated revulsion at having to do anything with the cord. They reported that mothers compared the cord to a "dirty appendage" (Salariya and Kowbus, p. 71) they were hesitant to clean and were happier at not having to touch or treat the cord as most were "frightened or sickened by it."…”
