Actually, gas transportation in hydrocarbon industries in several countries is based mainly on the use of centrifugal compressors to ensure precise spots under specified conditions. However, these machines are subjected to very serious phenomenon, such as the surge phenomenon, which presents the state of unstable operation that results in pulsations than can be the main cause of certain dangerous mechanical problem. Therefore, to solve this problem, it is necessary to establish a control law which can manage these devices, where the main goal is to obtain the best performance. On the other hand, it is obvious that to achieve this task, the models of this surge phenomenon have to be well determined earlier. This work proposes tests to validate models of the surge phenomenon in a centrifugal compressor set for anti-surge control when the operating mode is in the unstable regime. Real-time tests on the examined gas compression system were used to generate the experimental results. The developed surge model could better control the considered system.

In this work, we address the stability of compression systems and the active control of surge. Despite considerable efforts to stabilize axial compressors at efficient operating points, preventing surge is still a challenging problem. Here, the twostate Moore-Greitzer model comprising close-coupled valve and including parameter uncertainties and external disturbances, is considered. A feedback linearization approach transforms the original nonlinear model into an equivalent linear system. A passivity-based control is then suggested to robustly stabilize the linearized system in the presence of external disturbances and model uncertainties. Time-domain simulations strongly corroborate analytical developments and demonstrate the robust performance of the controller.

This paper presents the local bifurcation analysis of the dynamic behavior for a centrifugal compressor. It is known that the surge phenomenon in compressor dynamics might occur at high pressure rise operation. Under such an operation, slight variation of the driving torque and/or the throttle opening might sharply reduce the compressor efficiency and even damage the system. Local bifurcation analysis of the centrifugal compressor system presented in this paper reveals the existence conditions of surge phenomenon. Bifurcation scenarios of compressor dynamics are also obtained with respect to the variation of driving torque and/or throttle opening, which provide a guide to determine the occurrence of nonlinear phenomena and reveal the stability limit for the compressor dynamics in the practical application. Numerical results demonstrate the linkage between nonlinear dynamical behavior and bifurcation phenomena.
