Variability of Shear Wave Velocity using Different Frequencies in Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) Elastography: A Phantom and Normal Liver Study

Abstract: SWVs and variability are different depending on the depth and the frequency used. SWVs with a low frequency probe had a tendency to be higher at the same depth. To reduce variability of SWV, a high frequency probe is recommended for a depth of 2-3 cm, and a low frequency probe is recommended for a depth of 4-5 cm.

“…Hence, the measurement procedure in the second part of the study was repeated five times for each target type, with the stiffness value defined as the mean of the five measurements for each ROI diameter (diameters: 40, 38, 36, 34,32,30,28,26,24,22,20,18,16,14,12,10,8,6, 4 and 2 mm).…”

“…In ARFI, the power of the force applied on the transducer by the operator [18,41,42], the distance from source to target [21,27,34,42] -in current imaging methods is important as is the maximal depth is 8 cm [8], and also the frequency of the probe [42,43], all of these being potential modifiers of measured shear wave velocity. Furthermore, placement of the probe on the cortex may be difficult in advanced CKD because of a small cortical parenchyma thickness.…”

“…Increasingly, new areas of usage for this novel imaging modality are being described in the literature. To improve the utility of this method, particularly in the diagnosis of pathological tissues, the elasticity values of normal soft tissues [1][2][3][4][5][6] or comparisons between normal and pathological tissues have been described by recent reports [7]. Additionally, the characterization and/or differentiation of pathological tissues by US elastography have increasingly been evaluated by numerous up-to-date studies that aimed to reveal the diagnostic efficacy of US elastography in differentiating benign or malignant conditions.…”
