Variability in seed germination of barley cultivars (Hordeum vulgare L.) grown under different nitrogen application rates

Abstract: Variability in the percentage of seed germination was studied in four winter barley cultivars ('Jagodinac', 'Premium', 'NS 489' and 'NS 495'), grown under four nitrogen application rates (control N 0 =0, N 1 =20, N 2 =40 and N 3 =60 kg ha -1 ) during two years of the experiment. The experiment was carried out as a randomised block design in 5m 2 plots and with four replications. In both experimental years, the average seed germination was over 90.0% for all barley cultivars and in each nitrogen fertilisation t… Show more

“…Between the elements of mineral nutrition, the nitrogen has the greatest role in yield increases of cultivated species (Kneţević et al, 2007;Đekić et al, 2014;Terzic et al, 2018b;Madić et al, 2019), especially in wheat (Jelic et al, 2015;Khan and Mohammad, 2016;Đekić et al, 2017a;Rajičić et al, 2020). Nitrogen is showing the greatest effect through the joint usage with phosphorus and potassium (Popović et al, 2011;Đekić et al, 2014;Jelić et al, 2014;Khan et al, 2017;Terzic et al, 2018b;Kneţević et al, 2019;Rajičić et al, 2019).…”

“…In production practice of cereal and other annual crops are sown as monocultures with applied crop rotation to protect soil properties (fertility of soil, nutrients) and suppressing weeds, reduce pest and pathogens (Smith et al, 2011). The achievement of high yield in conventional cultivation determined with genetic control of numerous traits of seed (Kneţević et al, 2019a), stem (Branković et al, 2015) nitrogen nutrition (Kneţević et al, 2016;Stupar et al, 2017) soil quality and regime of fertilization (Madić et al, 2019) agro ecological conditions (Kondić et al, 2012). The monocrop of pea and cereals characterize good productivity.…”
