Variability in Morpho-physiology, Tuber Yield and Starch Content of Several Arrowroot Populations in Garut District

Abstract: Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea L.) is an important starchy plant which has potential utilization for food, industry and medicine. The study was undertaken to assess the variability in morpho-physiological characters, tuber yield and starch content of 23 arrowroot populations in Garut District, West Java. The result showed some significant differences in morpho-physiological characteristics, tuber yield and starch content. Growth characteristics revealed that Cilawu population recorded the highest values for so… Show more

“…The oil content also formed the obtuse angle with some agro-climate factors, such as altitude, relative humidity and precipitation, while as the sharp angle was formed by oil content and temperature. The obtuse angle revealed a negative correlation between characters, and conversely the sharp angle showed a positive correlation (Nurhasybi et al 2009;Rohandi et al 2017). Pemenang population associated with oil content, indicating the population have high trait of oil content, and opposite each other with Bogor population that have high seed length, seed width and moisture content.…”

“…Low light intensity (RLI 38%) triggered auxin activity to elongate the plant's height [33]. Under the shade, the light intensity for photosynthesis decreased, which affected the development of arrowroot tubers, such as biomass and starch content [55]. The weight of cultivated arrowroot tubers is higher than those that grow naturally.…”

“…The starch from West Indian arrowroot flour had a nutrition composition of 25.9 % amylose, 0.14 % protein, 0.84 % fat, 11.9 % water, 0.58 % ash, 8.7 % insoluble dietary fiber, and 5.0 % soluble dietary fiber (Kumalasari et al, 2012). The starch also has a similar characteristic with cassava, potato, and banana starch (Rohandi, Budiadi, Hardiwinoto, Harmayani, and Sudrajat, 2017). Thus, arrowroot flour had higher protein content than cassava flour (Aprianita, Vasiljevic, Bannikova, & Kasapis, 2014).…”

“…Exploration of new accessions are needed for increasing crop productivity. Rohandi, Budiadi, Hardiwinoto, Harmayani, & Sudrajat (2017) reported that in Garut District, there are three populations of arrowroot which have high tuber yield. Cilawu, Cikajang, and Cibatu populations have good potential to produce the high quality and quantity for arrowroot cultivation.…”
