Territorial use rights in fisheries (TURF) are considered to aid to the sustainability of smallscale fisheries, because they remove the perverse incentives, which sustain the tragedy of the commons. Nevertheless, a comprehensive evaluation of the implementation of TURFs is lacking. Chile offers a unique opportunity, because an extensive system for benthic fisheries has been implemented, with at present hundreds of TURFs along the coast. This study analyzes the sustainability of all the TURFs (109) along a stretch of 800 Km of coast, using population, productive, economic, social and institutional indicators. The information was obtained from the technical reports and monitoring each TURF has to prepare for the authority each year, databases the authority has and interviews with artisanal fishermen. Three states of TURFs were identified: unsustainable, poorly sustainable and sustainable. The resources exploited in the analyzed TURFs are the chilean abalon or "loco" (Concholepas concholepas), the key hole limpets "lapa negra" (Fissurella latimarginata), and "lapa rosada" (Fissurella cumingi), the kelps "huiro negro" (Lessonia berteroana), and "huiro palo" (Lessonia trabeculata), the surf clam "Macha" (Mesodesma donacium), the scallop "ostión del norte" (Argopecten purpuratus) and the seaurchin "erizo rojo" (Loxechinus albus). Results show general low performance for population, production and economic indicators, but good performance for social and institutional indicators. Overall the system shows a poor sustainability, which principally means unstable populations, landings and income in most of the TURFs. This result, which differs from most published analyses of the system, is explained mainly by the impossibility to reach a stable fishery through management of so small areas, given the natural variability of the species and the general environment. The good performance of some TURFs cannot be explained by a single factor, which is consistent with the complexity of the system, which makes it little amenable for proper management.

Estuarine fronts are critical in the retention and dispersion of ichthyoplankton. This study evaluates the response of ichthyoplankton assemblage to front dynamics in one of the world's largest estuaries, the Río de la Plata. Surveys were conducted between October 2014 and December 2017, using the turbidity front (TF) location determined by satellite imagery as a proxy for the estuarine front. Although most larval taxa belonged to the freshwater category, the highest abundances were found in the estuarine category. Contrary to most estuaries, the incidence of pelagic egg spawners was high in the studied estuary. The highest species richness and abundance occurred during spring and summer, linked to the spawning seasons and locations. TF dynamics was the primary driver of interannual variability in ichthyoplankton assemblages, revealing opposite trends with ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) events. A strong El Niño event (2015–2016) led to decreased total abundance and dominance of freshwater larvae with a seaward shift of the TF, while a weak La Niña event (2016–2017) resulted in increased abundance of marine larvae with the retraction of the TF. Based on current climatic predictions, it is likely that the estuarine frontal zones will be affected in the future, which could have a significant impact on ichthyoplankton assemblage. Therefore, coastal conservation is critical and should be integrated into management plans to preserve ichthyoplankton dynamics and fish populations.

The relationship between climate variability and the small-scale fishery (SSF) of the Albuquerque Cays was studied from 2004 to 2018. The environmental variables analyzed were: sea surface temperature (SST), wind magnitude, and chlorophyll (Chl-α). The fishery is multi-species; 410 individuals were identified, belonging to 4 orders, 15 families, and 62 species, of which 38.7% are reef, 35.5% demersal, and 25.8% pelagic. The most dominant species were Caranx latus, Elagatis bipinnulata, Coryphaena hippurus, Lutjanus vivanus, Ocyurus chrysurus, Thunnus atlanticus, Sphyraena barracuda, Canthidermis sufflamen, Etelis oculatus, Acanthocybium solandri, Lutjanus jocu, Balistes vetula, Lutjanus buccanella, followed by Rhomboplites aurorubens and Mycteroperca bonaci. The pelagic species that contribute the most in biomass and commercial importance are S. barracuda, A. solandri, T. atlanticus, and E. bipinnulata, the most important due to their high market value. A significant correlation was found among SST, Chl-α, wind magnitude, and catch per unit effort (CPUE) anomalies. The highest CPUE values occurred in January, March, June and September were associated with the passage of cold fronts and hurricanes, giving way to new fishing opportunities and conservation of some resources.
