Vanillin mitigates potassium bromate-induced molecular, biochemical and histopathological changes in the kidney of adult mice

“…The gastric sodium potassium pump is an (αβ) 2 transmembrane protein that is crucial for maintaining cell polarity via the Na + and k + membrane gradients (Georgios, 2002), and impaired Na + , k + -ATPase expression and activity has been reported in different pathologies (Mijatovic et al, 2012;Wang et al, 2017). We found increased Na + , k + -ATPase activity in potassium bromate-treated rats but this activity was diminished in the group exposed to potassium bromate and protocatechuic acid, suggesting the potential of both potassium bromate and protocatechuic acid to alter gastric cellular polarity, similar to reports of reduced Na + , k + -ATPase activity in organs of rats exposed to potassium bromate or protocatechuic acid (Campbell, 2006;Saad et al, 2016;Yin et al, 2009).
