Vancomycin-resistant enterococci and coagulase-negative staphylococci prevalence among patients attending at Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia

Abstract: Background Vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) and vancomycin resistance coagulase negative staphylococci (VRCoNS) are common pathogens causing difficult to treat health care associated infections (HAI). Hence, the World Health Organization listed VRE as one of the high priority pathogens for new antibiotic discovery and antimicrobial resistance surveillance. Despite this, data on the prevalence of VRE and VRCoNS in Ethiopia is scarce. Thus, the present study determined prevalence of VRE and VRCoNS among pa… Show more

“…In our study, the carriage of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus was 14.6 %, which is lower than findings from Ghana 47.3% [ 52 ], and Bahirdar Ethiopia 12% [ 53 ]. In the same way, the finding of Klebsiella species carriage was greater than 4.4 %, which is lower than the finding reported from Indonesia 11% [ 54 ].…”

“…This is similar to reports from Ethiopia where 58.8% of enterococci were susceptible to vancomycin. 49 Furthermore, 27% of Klebsiella , 2.8% of E. coli , and 5.6% of enterobacteria were found to be carbapenem-resistant. In total, 11.05% of 190 HAIs belonging to Enterobacteriaceae were found to have carbapenem resistance.…”
