Valuing Coastal Habitat–Fishery Linkages under Regulated Open Access

Abstract: This paper explores how regulation of an open access fishery influences the value of a coastal habitat that serves as breeding and nursery grounds. A model of the fishery supported by a coastal wetland is developed, which includes a quota rule that restricts harvest to a fixed proportion of the current stock. The model is applied to mangrove-dependent shellfish and demersal fisheries in Thailand. The value of the welfare effects associated with a change in a supporting coastal habitat is influenced significant… Show more

“…Therefore, a detailed study on the impacts of the changing water quality on the life cycle, metabolism, growth, stress management strategies, production, and reproduction, including the economic values of any particular mangrove species, is warranted [10]. Results of such research on the water qualities and associated biotic and abiotic stressors/markers will lead to the draw appropriate policies to protect the mangrove/estuarine habitats and their inhabitants [11][12][13].…”

“…Most studies lacked a comprehensive approach to capture both use and nonuse values, although some recent research has integrated valuation for a broader array of CME services [18]. In addition, these studies rarely take into consideration the impacts that regulation and management may have on the value of interconnected provisioning and supporting ecosystem services [83].…”

“…Barbier [3] develops a theoretical framework to consider the impact of an open access fishery harvesting regulation on coastal habitat-dependent fishery stocks. The bioeconomic model integrates coastal breeding and nursery habitat availability with quota rules to limit the harvest of near-shore stocks.…”
