Coastal Resources Economics and Ecosystem Valuation

Abstract: The papers in this special issue provide new insights into ongoing research to value coastal and marine ecosystem services, and offer meaningful information for policymakers and resource managers about the economic significance of coastal resources for planning, restoration, and damage assessment. Study areas encompass a broad geographic scope from the Gulf of Mexico in the United States, to the Caribbean, the European Union, Australia, and Southeast Asia. The focus of these papers ranges from theoretical pers… Show more

“…However, although we know that oceans provide diverse and important ecosystem services to society, ensuring the sustainability of these services depends on collaborative data collection to support complex ocean governance decisions (Polejack et al , 2021). The connection between planning and coastal policy management can benefit from data and information on the impact of policy decisions (Milon and Alvarez, 2019), especially when the ability of natural systems to function optimally has been reduced, increasing the vulnerability of regions and local communities through the loss of ecosystem services (Ateweberhan et al , 2018).…”

“…In spite of this, over the past decades, there has been increasing research effort in assessing the value of services generated by marine ecosystems and in incorporating these values into marine planning and decision making [18].…”

“…One of the main problems is related to the limited availability of data to conduct benefit transfers at the global scale. In fact, Pendleton et al [75] conducted a literature review on the valuation of coastal and marine ecosystem services, highlighting that studies were mainly only concentrated on four coastal and marine ecosystems (i.e., coastal beaches, marine fishing, coastal lands, and wetlands) and that the geographic coverage was concentrated in a few states [18]. Although there are several limitations of global scale assessments of ecosystem services, they have been important in raising awareness on the importance of ecosystems for human well-being.…”
