Bu çalışma Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nin Wisconsin eyaletinin Cashton Bölgesinde yaşayan Amish topluluğunun gastronomi kültürünü incelemek amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmada sağlıklı verilerin elde edilebilmesi için veri toplama yöntemi olarak derinlemesine görüşme yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Hristiyanlığın bir mezhebi olan Amish'lerin inançları gereği kapalı bir yaşam tarzını benimsedikleri, teknolojiyi reddeden ve dış toplum ile kısmen iletişimde oldukları bilinmektedir. Bu bağlamda Amish topluluğunun gastronomik kültürünü oluşturan yemek ritüelleri, gıda üretimi, gıda tedariki, gıda işlenmesi ve servis süreçleri hakkında bilgi toplamak amacıyla literatürden faydalanılarak yarı yapılandırılmış bir soru formu hazırlanmıştır. Veri toplama sürecinde araştırmacılar Wisconsin eyaletinin Cashton bölgesinde yaşayan Amish topluluğu ile yaklaşık iki hafta geçirip bölge halkı ile görüşmeler yaparak çeşitli gözlemlerde bulunmalarının çalışmayı önemli kıldığı düşünülmektedir. Çalışmaya yedi erkek ve beş kadın olmak üzere toplam 12 aile lideri veya üyesi katkı sağlamıştır. Elde edilen verilerin analizi aşaması; katılımcıların cevapları kategorilere ayrılması, katılımcıların verdikleri cevaplardan direk alıntılar yapılması ve araştırmacıların yorumlarına yer verilmesi, kod ve temaların oluşturularak tablolar halinde sunulması ile gerçekleşmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda Amish'lerin geleneksel yöntemler ile üretim yaptıkları, gıda tedarikini genellikle kendi ürettikleri ürünlerden sağladıkları, tarım ve hayvancılık ile geçimlerini sağladıkları anlaşılmıştır. Ayrıca Amish'lerin gıdaları saklamada geleneksel yöntemler olan kurutma, konserve, tuzlama, fermente etme ve pişirerek saklama gibi yöntemleri kullandıkları sonucuna varılmıştır.

The sociological study of risk-taking behavior is a relatively recent development. Lyng (1990) and others have developed the field of edgework, or the “sociology of risk-taking.” In this study, we examine a group of edgeworkers to understand the role of fun and identity in a group of BMX “freestyle” bicycle riders and conclude that these riders reject rational reasons, in the sense of the term envisioned by Weber, for riding in favor of choosing an activity that they report as fun, which leads to feelings such as self-actualization and fulfillment. Additionally, they are not concerned that others, outside of the subculture, recognize their status as participants, further suggesting that rationality played little into the calculation used to define success by this group.

Attending motorcycle rallies is an important component of social life for many touring motorcyclists. The significance of these events transcends the mere recreational experience of riding a motorcycle and spending time with other riders. This project is an examination of brand specific motorcycle rallies as a process and social world that has ritualistic features and activities that serve to bond members of the group, reinforce their identity, and distinguish members of this subculture from other motorcyclists and from the larger social world. Drawing on classical social theory and more contemporary research, a framework is established to discuss the activities and social organization of rallies. Objects from the material culture of those involved are examined as distinguishing components used to establish boundaries and confer membership. An in depth description of rally activities and interactions, enhances the understanding of these events.
