Value chain innovations for technology transfer in developing and emerging economies: Conceptual issues, typology, and policy implications

Abstract: The adoption of modern technologies in agriculture is crucial for improving productivity of poor farmers and poverty reduction. However, the adoption of modern technology has been disappointing. The role of value chains in technology adoption has been largely ignored so far, despite the dramatic transformation and spread of modern agri-food value chains. We argue that value chain organization and innovations can have an important impact on modern technology adoption, not just by downstream companies, but also … Show more

“…GIs also stimulate technological upgrades in agri‐food chains (Swinnen & Kuijpers, 2019) because GI members can make additional efforts to improve quality above the GI standards (e.g., by investing in more stringent quality controls) and by doing so, differentiate their products (private brands) within the GI (Dentoni, Menozzi, & Capelli, 2012). Firms are interested in making such extra efforts because they are the residual claimants of their returns (i.e., they are expected to increase the price premium of their private brands).…”

“…The changes in rice production systems have been associated with major changes in rice value chains (ACI 2005;Purcell et al 2008;Reardon et al 2014;Haefele and Gummert 2015;Swinnen and Kuijpers 2019), as summarised in Fig. 1.7.…”

“…In the past 2–3 decades, agricultural value chains in developing countries have experienced dramatic structural transformation, driven by several factors such as population growth, rising urbanization, increasing consumer incomes, and varying consumer dietary requirements (Henderson & Isaac, 2017; Mensah, Adu, Amoah, Abrokwa, & Adu, 2016; Swinnen & Kuijpers, 2019). While the value chain transformation is considered important in reducing rural poverty, improving food and nutrition security, and ensuring overall economic growth, smallholder farmers' inclusion in these chains still remains a major challenge in developing countries.…”
