Peanut shells (PSs) generated from agricultural waste contain valuable compounds with bioactive properties such as anti-aging, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, making it desirable to recycle them as a sustainable resource. The aim of this study is to design an effective luteolin recovery process as the first step of an integrated biorefinery utilizing PSs as raw material. The major extraction variables and their ranges for luteolin recovery from PSs were determined (0–60 °C, 1–5 h, 0–100% MeOH concentration) and a predictive model was derived through a response surface methodology (RSM). Based on the predictive model, the equation determined for the maximal extraction of luteolin at 1 h was as follows: y = –1.8475x + 159.57, and the significant range of variables was as follows: 33.8 °C ≤ temperature (x) ≤ 48.5 °C and 70.0% ≤ MeOH concentration (y) ≤ 97.5%, respectively. High antioxidant and elastase inhibitory activities of PS extracts were confirmed, and these results support their potential to be used as functional materials. In addition, 39.2% of the solid residue after extraction was carbohydrate, which has potential as a carbon source for fermentation. This study provides a useful direction on an integrated biorefinery approach for sustainable agricultural waste valorization.

Ecklonia cava (EC), an edible brown macroalga abundant in intertidal areas of East Asia (Korea, Japan, and China), contains high-value bioactive compounds such as dieckol, which has antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antihyperlipidemic activities. However, no studies have been reported on the utilization of EC as a biorefinery feedstock, and the design of a more economical and high-yield process is required for the utilization of dieckol for the human healthcare industry. In this study, we designed a bioprocess for the high-yield recovery of dieckol from EC in a generally recognized as safe (GRAS) solvent to facilitate its application in the food and healthcare industries. Preliminary studies identified ethanol as an efficient solvent with the highest dieckol extraction yield (2.9 mg/g biomass). In order to maximize the recovery of dieckol from EC, the major extraction variables (solvent concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time) were optimized based on statistical methods. Based on the predictive model, the numerical optimization determined that the solution with the highest dieckol content per weight of extract (62.6 vol% ethanol concentration, 54.2°C temperature, 13.2 min) was the optimal extraction condition. Under the determined conditions, the dieckol yield from EC achieved 6.4 mg dieckol/g EC (95.5% agreement with the predicted value). The designed process offers several advantages, including improving the utilization feasibility of EC, utilizing GRAS solvents with potential human applications, short extraction time (13.2 min), maximized process yield, and the highest dieckol recovery compared to previous reports.

Phytochemical and Antioxidant Characterization of Extracts from Unexplored Medicinal Plants Salix schwerinii and Salix kochiana

For a long time, species of the genus Salix have been widely utilized and studied as medicinal plants; however, the biological activity and phytochemical composition of Salix schwerinii (SS) and S. kochiana (SK) have not been studied at all. This study investigated the antioxidant properties of SS and SK extracts and detected phytochemical compounds in the extracts. The results showed that the antioxidant activities (IC50) of SS extract, SK extract, and ascorbic acid (reference) were as follows, respectively: 169.8, 79.8, and 71.2 μg mL−1 for ABTS cation radical scavenging and 38.4, 26.2, and 9.3 μg mL−1 for DPPH free radical scavenging. The results imply that SK has a high potential as a natural antioxidant. The phytochemical compositions of extracts (mg g−1) were analyzed as follows: SS extracts, 217.7 phenolics (1.54 catechin, 0.86 syringic acid, 0.46 luteolin, and others) and 5.06 salicin; SK extracts, 71.0 phenolics (0.54 catechin, 0.28 myricetin, 0.12 salicylic acid, and others) and 2.11 salicin. Compared to previous studies, the present findings go further to highlight that SS deserves attention as a novel source of salicin. The present study highlights the need for further studies on the aspects of medicinal functions of the extracts, bioprocess design for efficient phytochemical extraction, and applications of bioactive substances.
