Little information has been published on Peruvian chelonians. Here we have compiled the available literature pertaining to Peruvian freshwater turtles and tortoises on four topics: Human consumption and ethnobiology, habitat use, status and abundance, and reproduction. In addition, we provide a map of the regions of Peru showing the number of research records and the number of species that occur in each region. Reproduction was the topic most frequently studied, although investigations were concentrated on only three species (Podocnemis unifilis, P. expansa, P. sextuberculata). The regions where the most studies were implemented are the Departamentos de Loreto and Madre de Dios, with studies tending to be concentrated in the vicinity of Iquitos, the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, and Manu National Park and its buffer zone. In general, regions in which more research effort was evident reported more turtle species, which suggests that the least-studied states could have more species, as they share the same types of habitats as the more intensely investigated regions. We identified major gaps in information and suggest future research in the following poorly studied Peruvian regions: Departaments of Junín, San Martín, Tumbes, Huanuco, Amazonas, Cusco, Ayacucho, Puno, Huancavelica, and Cajamarca. The status, distribution, and abundance of Peruvian populations of Podocnemis expansa, P. unifilis, Chelonoidis carbonaria, Peltocephalus dumerilianus, and Mesoclemmys heliostemma are in particular need of study. Conservation priorities are also discussed.

We synthesize information on parameters useful for managing the hunting of two common mammal species that are important for local people in the Neotropics and Africa: Cuniculus paca and Philantomba monticola, respectively. We highlight the scarcity of data available on the parameters needed to manage these two species sustainably. As most of the studies were conducted > 40 years ago, we stress the need to supplement the information available using methodological and technical innovations. In particular, we call for new assessments covering the possible variations in parameter values across the species’ distribution ranges, and covering various anthropogenic contexts, to test density-dependent and compensatory processes that may explain the resilience of these species to hunting.

Consumo de animales silvestres en tiempos de pandemia de coronavirus en las regiones de la Selva Peruana

Objetivo: Determinar la cantidad de carne de animales silvestres consumidos en tiempos de pandemia de COVID-19 por habitantes de la Selva Peruana. Materiales y métodos: Investigación cuantitativa, observacional y analítica, tuvo un diseño de investigación descriptivo, correlacional y prospectivo; la población estuvo compuesta por 1502 personas y la muestra fue no probabilística, por conveniencia y se incluyó un total de 316 participantes. Resultados: los resultados obtenidos fueron que existe relación entre las características sociodemográficas de los habitantes consumidores de proteína de animales silvestres y las especies más frecuentemente consumidas. Existe relación entre el consumo de carne y pescado antes y durante el COVID-19 en habitantes de la selva peruana. No cambió la percepción acerca del COVID-19 que tienen los habitantes de la selva peruana al consumir carne de animales silvestres. Existe relación entre la disminución de la seguridad alimentaria y el cambio del consumo de proteína animal a partir de surgimiento de la pandemia del COVID-19 en habitantes de la selva peruana. Conclusión: aumentó el consumo de animales silvestres en tiempos de pandemia de COVID-19 en la selva peruana y se recomienda que el estado brinde apoyo financiero y técnico a las familias que consumen proteínas de animales silvestres para mejorar su aporte alimentario.
