Validity, Reproducibility, and Clinical Significance of Noninvasive Brachial-Ankle Pulse Wave Velocity Measurement.

Abstract: The present study was conducted to evaluate the validity and reproducibility of noninvasive brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) measurements and to examine the alteration of baPWV in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Simultaneous recordings of baPWV by a simple, noninvasive method and aortic pulse wave velosity (PWV) using a catheter tip with pressure manometer were performed in 41 patients with CAD, vasospastic angina, or cardiomyopathy. In 32 subjects (15 controls and 17 patients with CAD),… Show more

“…Further studies are needed to confirm the present findings in women, in other ethnicities, and in the general population. Second, baPWV actually reflects the stiffness of the large‐ to medium‐sized arteries11, 12, 14; therefore, the importance of aortic stiffness in blood pressure elevation could not be examined precisely in this study. Third, the effect of habitual exercise, which is well known to affect the blood pressure and arterial stiffness,19 was not examined in the present study.…”

“…The baPWV was measured once using a volume‐plethysmographic apparatus (Form/ABI; Omron Healthcare), as described previously 14. Briefly, occlusion cuffs connected to both the plethysmographic and oscillometric sensors were tied around both the upper arms and legs of the participants lying in the supine position.…”

“…17 Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) has also been developed as a simple, non-invasive index of arterial stiffness and is reported to be correlated with carotid-femoral PWV. 18 Participants were studied under quiet resting conditions in the supine position. BaPWV and carotid augmentation index (AI), which are indexes of arterial stiffness and wave Fitness and cardiovascular ageing Y Gando et al reflection, and BP were measured using a semiautomated oscillometric device (form PWV/ABI; Colin Medical Technology, Komaki, Japan) according to the method previously described.…”

ECG electrodes were placed on both wrists, and a heart sound microphone was placed on the left sternal border.…”

“…Details of the method have been described elsewhere. 12 The ABI or TBI was calculated bilaterally as the ratio of systolic pressure in the ankle or toe to systolic pressure in the arm, with the lower value considered as a representative for each subject. Intracoefficient of variation of ABI and TBI were 0.045 and 0.013, respectively, and inter-coefficient of variation of ABI and TBI were 0.015 and 0.017, respectively.…”
